The fund will provide scholar ships to promising young men and women E.A. Carter To Run Against Adam Clayton Powell By ALVIN E. WHITE NEW YORK (ANP) Elmer A. Carter, member of the State Com mittee Against Discrimination haa been designated as the Republican Party candidate to oppose Adam Clayton Powell for Congress this fall. Carter, an Independent Democrat, has long enjoyed the confidence of Republican state officials as his present job which pays over SIO,OOO a year attests. The former editor of Opportunity magazine, and Har vard graduate served with the N.Y. State Labor department before he was named to the SCAD. Dipping into the ranks of inde pendent Democrats for a candidate gives credence to the report that Republican state chairman, Thomas Curran wants a “coalition candidate 1 to defeat Adam Powell. * *A successful coalition device was called upon to name a candidate to oppose Vito Marcantonio in the 12th district. (ANP) A feud between ousted members and the i*a«tor of the Mount Calvary Raptist church ended In victory for the members last week when the Maricopa county Superior court or dered the ousting of the minister. The Kev. W. A. Washington, pastor, whs ordered to vacate the parsonage by July 1. This dedflon ended wrangling between the pas tor nnd a group of members that began liack in February. W. 3rd Avenue Miami, Florida PAGE THREE Brooklyn Buys Two More Negro Players The Brooklyn Dodgers ball club have purchased the contracts of two outbidders of the Houston Eagles of the Negro American League, Bob Wilson and James E. Wilks. Both have been as signed to the Elmira, N. Y., ►team of the Eastern league. In 30 games this season Wilson is batting .357 with 45 hits in 126 trips to the plate. In 1949 he ranked Bth in the league in batting with a mark of .355. He pounded out 93 hits in 262 times at bat in 60 games for the Eagles. His 15 strikeouts was the lowest of any regu lar in the NAL for the sea son. Last year he played third base and ranked low est in fielding with an aver age of only .874, committing 23 # errors, highest in the league. Wilks in 31 games has hit safely only 27. times in 127 times at bat for an average of .213. Last year he batted .257 with 67 hits in 261 trips to the plate. His 12 stolen bases ranked him fourth in that department. Wilks was a three way tie for second place in fielding among outfielders last sea son with a mark of .978. He committted only four errors out of 186 chances. open in February when the church choir sang at a meeting of the Na tional Baptist Convention of Ameri ca against the preacher’s wishes. He dropped the members from the church’s roles, according to reports. This happened although the church had been a member of this convention. It seems the minister wanted it to belong to the other Baptist group, the National Baptist Convention of the U. S. A., Inc. ( Eight discharged members con tinued to object to the minister, so he took the case to court. This began a series of court or ders and injunctions and mistrials with first one side then the other winning. It finally culminated in the ousting of the minister.
