MIAMI TIMES, MIAMI, FLORIDA PAGE SIX I’ve Been Thinking BT CAB CALLOWAY ' This country may have its faults ... for after all_this is not a complete Utopia ... but is a rare land indeed whore you c&n h&ve the freedom to express your gnc\ dn ces without having to fear your life. Much of the population is too narrow-minded to lis ten to your grievances, but there are those who will, and that list is ever-expanding. It is significant to note, too, that more and more people of tolerance are finding their way into public life, into places of public prominence, and into positions of commercial importance. It is a minor grievance, indeed, but I have been more and more annoyed, being in the entertainment business, with the downright refusal of major radio and television interest to build radio and television programs around all- Negro casts. - , With this grievance strongly m mind I was asked to enter into a panel discussion on “What’s Wrong With Television” over WPIX in New York City as the guest of the famous columnist, Ed Sullivan. Before going on the air and before the cameras I told Ed what I thought and he didn’t crawl back into his shell even an inch. I “If you think it, Cab, then say it,” Ed insisted. I I didn’t spare any of the horses on that show and be lieve it or not, I was not cut off the mike. I wasn’t waved down by the producers. I wasn’t intimidated one bit. Here I was criticising the very medium over which I was speak-, ing, being seen . . . and nobody threw a net over my head or grabbed my collar with a hook. Informally, after the show, Ed Sullivan told me to get my show together because he’d like to see it . . . maybe he could help it into the niche it might deserve before the television cameras. If you have a gripe, sometimes you have a tendency to let it boil inside until finally it explodes and a lot of ham is done. And I know that in many cases, despite our dem ocratic ideals, you simply, must not speak your piece . . . but in normal cases, under normal circumstances, this is a land where you can be heard and there some people open-minded enough to listen to you and work with you. And tomorrow there will be more people like that and less bigots. And the next day the progress will be greater. It isn’t the individual problem. It’s that right to say what you think that’s important. Then after your right to speak, the next most important thing is for people to lis ten and understand. The next step is for these people to learn to act, after weighing the issue carefully. It isn’t Utopia now, but if those things are accom plished . . .and if there are more and more Ed Sullivans and WPIXs, it may be Utopia, yet! Are you hungry Then Stop in at. . . The plan for the concentrated battle against segregated education was agreed upon by the conference without a dissenting vote, Mr. Mar shall said. ONLY NON-SEGREGATION ACCEPTABLE Stressing the fact that all educa tional basis and that no relief other than that will be acceptable as such,” Mr. Marshall stated that special emphasis will be placed on the use of the three-judge federal court, as used in tne McLaurin case. Such a court permits immediate ap peal to the United States Supreme Court as a matter of right, whereas an appeal for certiorari makes court review a matter of discretion. The conference recognized, Mr. Marshall said, that the NAACP legal staff could move no faster than persons involved in these education agreement that with careful plan ning and timing there is no doubt whatsoever that all phases of segre gation in public education from pro fessional school to kindergarten can be removed through legal action.” The NAACP special counsel also in dicated that the breakdown of seg regation would likewise extend to recreation and allied fields.
