Beating The Gun
Question You Sent Me
NEW YORK (ANP) From Paul West, Harlem,
comes this note regarding Checkers and Chess:
Dear A1 Moses:
I read your recent article on James Evans and Eugene
Teer and I’d like to ask you who are the great White
checker and chess champions of the past 10 years?
(A) In Chess; Dr. Alexander Alekhine, Paris, who
died in 1946; Dr. Juan Gonzalez, Havana; Reuben Fine,
U. S. A., Dr. Max Euwe, Holland.
(Q) I contend that during the years I worked as a
waiter in Babylon, L. 1., (1896) such cities as Philadelphia
and New York were “cock fighting” centers. Can you
check on this and tell me what some of the prize money
amounted to please—R. H. Simpkins, NYC.
(A) In the matter of spectator wagering together with
the actual battle stake, it ran at times as high as 60,000
according to the record book of Frank G. Menke. Cock
fighting was prevalent insuch centers as Boston, Balti
more, Washington, D. C., and the cities you named.
(Q) Since Joe Louis is in training to attempt a come
back, when did he win the title and what were the gate
receipts?—S.H.T., St. Louis, Mo.
(A) June 22, 1937. The gross take was $716,470.
(Q) Is Althea Gibson who next month may become
the first Negro to play in the coveted Tennis Nationals at
Forest Hills the all-time greatest of Negro women tennis
stars?—Messye Atkin, S.t Paul, Minn.
(A) That is a real stiff question for in my writings I
have regarded Miss Gibson as the finest Pve seen. How
ever, many tennis lovers of 20 years back claim Ora
Washington, basketball and tennis ace, to be foremost.
(Q) (a) claims Jim Jefferies never consented to giv
ing away his title which was won by Jack Root in 12 rds.
(b) claims Root never won it but that Tommy Burns did.
Who is right, and where does Jack Johnson come into the
picture?—Floyd Hamilton, Toledo, O.
(A) Neither one is correct. Marvin Hart, Kentucky
born, whipped Jack Root in 1905 for the vacated title.
Burns in 1906 whipped Marvin Hart. Jack Johnson won
title from Tommy Burns on Dec. 25, 1908, Sydney, Aus
tralia when the one-sided battle was stopped by the po
lice in the 14th round. Burns was cut to ribbons by the
“golden-smiling” Johnson who had chased Burns around
the globe to secure the championship match. Johnson, was
champion (not Jefferies) when he faced Jefferies in 1910
at Reno, Nev.
(Q) What was the year Buddy Young, (N.Y. Yan
kees) starred in the Rose Bowl classic and what was his
college?—Sol Dabnel, Montpelier, Vt.
(A) 1947 (Illinois Uni.)
(Q) What record did Kenny Washington establish
during a game between the Los Angeles Bulldogs and the
Hollywood Bears about six years ago? Lloyd Calein,
Oakland, Cal.
(A) It was a pass record (71 yards) which stood as a
pro-football record. Washington, was a super passing ace
among his other talents. ,
WILL THE NEGRO FIGHT THE REDS?
By Harry Levette
What do you say now, you who rated loud
That it would be “unspeakable” to think
Negroes would bear arms against Russia? Vowed
That we’d refuse while at war’s threatening brink?
No one has tarried. Men of the brave 24th
As in all wars leaped fiercely to their posts;
They met the Red spawn from Korea’s north,
Battling till death, ’gainst far outnumbering hosts.
Where go the Stars and Stripes, the Negro heeds the call
For America with all its faults is best after all.
