Beating The Gun
BY AL MOSES
ED SULLIVAN'S SERMON
NEW YORK (ANP) For years Ed Sullivan, col
umnist of the NY Daily News, has been a real good friend
of mine. In all of my scrapbooks containing lines devoted
to my theatrical and sports opinions the “Sullivan com-:
ment” has always, been welcomed.
Following the tragic ring demise of Joe Louis, Cham
pion-of-champions in my dictionary, Ed Turned out a clas
sic. The sort of story that should be treasured by future
Ezzard Charles opponents.
It was the sort of column I wrote after VJ Day,
World War 11. Turning the pages of my scrapbook I see
that it was titled “Parasites, Will Ruin You Joe.”
Os course the Joe I referred to as you doubtless have
guessed was our fistic idol, Joe Louis. I pleaded with the
easy-to-touch “Brown Bomber” to get rid of the crowd
who had tailed him for handouts and stakes from the mo
ment he lost his “right arm” trainer, Jack Blackburn.
The night Louis fought Billy Conn after the war, I
personally begged him to put the gloves in mothballs,
thereby emulating bookish Gene Tunney in prizefight
history.
But Joe was the sort one sees every 20 years or so.
His way of life was imilar to that of free-spending Jack
His way of life was similar to that of ree-spending Jack
WATER UNDER BRIDGE
Mai Frazier, popular Harlemite in the entertainment
field, chatted with me on this score before I took my seat
at the Louis wake. Both of us thought Louis would win.
Together we spanned the episodes for which “fair
weather friends” were directly responsible. Investments
that proved to be money thrown in the lake included the
“Club Ebony” affair which Tom Delaney constantly af
firms had nothing to do with Joe Louis at all, etc, etc.
The fighting champion Joe Louis is no more. In his
place for many long years to come we hope, will be a
$16,000 per year director with the Jacobs’ 20th Century
Club's Prizefight dynasty. Joe also cuts in on one-sixth es
all the monies IBC earns, from its fistic promotions.
That’s no lucky break at all. I regard it as fitting rec
ognition and reward for a man who has knitted Whites
and Colored together as few of our leaders down the long
years have.
Through the medium of sports, ,the great equalizer,
Louis, has touched the masses, untold millions of them.
Youngters and older fans of every color and creed wor
shipped Louis as they did Babe Ruth and other American
sport immortals.
GREAT BOX-OFFICE MAGNET
What a mighty appeal Joe Louis had on the paying
customers! On the strength of Ezzard Charles’ present
fan appeal the recent title bout would not have drawn
more than the $97,000 Ezzard drew in his earlier appear
ance here with Elmer (Violent) Ray—remember??
Who among us would not like to be remembered as
will be Joe Louis Barrow? Take a peep at his record, not
inside the ring, but out of it in this connection. He made
you love him with his simply spoken “I’m glad I won, I
was lucky tonight.” Never a braggart; never an apology
always a clean fighting warrior who gave his best. *
Joe Louis, without the British Winston Churchill’s
scholastic background, revalled him in pearls-of-wisdom
that fortified the “forgotten man.” Standing in the comp
any of leaders in all walks of American life Louis said in
his inimitable manner; “We’ll win the war because we’re
on God’s side.”
When colored and White writers flayed him for do
nating his full purse to the war chests of our armed forces
Joe replied in a manner that hushed them up. His foun
tain of good mother wit and logic never once ran dry.
