AKA Sorority Meets With Board
Members Os Haven School
On the night of November 27,
a committee of Alpha Kappa
women, composed of the Messrs.
Dorothy Edwards, Mildred
Marks, Gussie Dobbs, Annabelle
Ward, Rose Stewart, and Miss
Paula Williams, met at the Phy
sicians Building on North Bay
shore Drive, with some of the
members of the Executive Board
of Haven School. They discussed
with the board members, Dr. Jean
Perdue, Mr. John McCudden,
Earle B. Bowser, Mrs. Nathaniel
Levin and Dr. Jess Spirer, the
possibilities of establishing a unit
at Haven School for Negro child
ren.
Haven School for the mentally
handicapped children was found
ed by this non-profit corporation,
and has been operating for a little
over a year. The effort started
about four years ago and continu
ed by “begging, borrowing and
stealing” and with “blood, sweat
and tears.” Labor, blocks, time,
plumbing equipment, electrical
supplies, lumber, and many other
materials and helps were donat
ed. The only sizable monetary
donation was a gift of SIO,OOO by
an anonymous donor. The plant
is now worth $250,000 with fully
equipped kitchen, dining room,
utility room, play space, rooms
for handicraft and woodworking,
and cottages for housing purposes.
All of this, for 25 happy children
who would otherwise be living in
an unsympathetic and unhappy
world. Their world has been cre
ated for them by a group of un
selfish, understanding group of
people. The upkeep of each child
is $l5O a month, and rising to
S2OO a month. A unit like this for
Negro children at Haven School
would be a wonderful thing, but
the initial cost would be at least
$75,000.
In the meantime, both groups
are to investigate the facilities
available for the state provided
Farm Colony at Gainesville for
Negro children. This is a custodial
and not a training cshool, which
now houses some 400 or 500
children.
Future meetings are to be held
until some sort of plan is worked
for these non-educable but train
able children.

People Places

THERE will be revelry and high
jinks tonight (Friday) running to
a feverish pitch Saturday night,
and fizzling out Sunday as folks
from all over the State gather
here to join with the local yokels
in celebrating Orange Blossom
Classic Time. The parade Satur
day morning will signal that its
time to “pitch” and start things
rolling. A lotta loot will be thrown
around and night club waitresses
are practicing up on their coyest
smiles and best service, while
business places are brushing the
cob webs from the money till.
The Blossom Classic has grown
into a giant among football ex
travaganzas, and, pardon if my
bragging is showing, but it took
Miami and the Orange Bowl to
nourish its frail body. Newspaper
men from over the country at
tend this game, and the game is
beginning to draw more fans
from neighboring states. From a
top atendance of from 9,000 to
10,000, its drawing power has in
creased to over 20,000!
After the grand celebration
wallets will be put back into hi
bernation until the Xmas holidays.
ONE SUNDAY morning a
White pastor of a small Georgia
church accosted a Colored breth
ren whom he had noticed in the
rear of his church:
“Son (you are not called nigger
on Sunday) I notice you have
been coming to worship for two
Sundays now,” said the good
Rev. “Do you think it’s right for
you to worship with White folks?
I want you to go to your shack
and ask the Lord if that’s right.”
The out of place brethren,
dressed in his best Sunday over
alls and blue shirt, turned away
and went home with the starched
‘rails swishing as he walked. At
home he followed the pastor’s
instructions.
Next Sunday the gentleman of
color was present early at church.
After service the pastor sought
out the misfit.
“Well son, did you pray anti
find out that you were doing
wrong by coming here?”
“Me and the Good Master,” said
Son, “had a long chat and He
ihinks I am an exceptional per
son.
“Yes?” said Rev.
“Yes. He thinks I’m exceptional
because He said He has been try
ing all git out for 20 years to get
in this church Himself!”

! FRATERNAL GREETINGS:
IMy Dear Daughters:
On the 4th day of November the
Master visited the grand temple
of Daughter Elks and took away
our beloved grand daughter ruler,
Elizabeth Ross Gordon. He left us
sad and weeping for such a great
woman who believed in giving
everyone a square deal and would
weigh everything before acting.
In the passing of Dt. Gordon, I
have lost a friend, the hand of
death has dealt me a severe blow
but I have firm hope in the re
surrection and I’m making great
plans and preparations for a re
union with Dt. Gordon.
Her successor is a younger
woman, Dt. Nettie Carter Jack
son, who has asked that we pledge
the same support to her as we
gave the late Grand Daughter
Ruler. In answering Dt. Jackson
I’ve instructed her to take God
for her guide and the waters will
not overflow, nor the flames
come high.
