FACT AND FUN
BY DICK WRIGHT FOR ANP
A major light of the American
theater faded with the death of
dramatic stir Canada Lee. Dur
ing his long career, which began
as a jockey, Lee numbered a
great many firsts to his credit.
One of the first will be remem- ,
bered as long as this country has
a theater and people to go to that
theater.
Since back as far as the old
minstrel days it has not been un
usual for a White actor or en
tertainer to apply burnt cork or
some cither blackening substance
to their faces and play the part of
a Negro. Even in the early dram
atizations of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”
Uncle Tom was mostly played by
White actors.
The dramatic artistry of Lee
enabled him to make a complete
change about this procedure.
Several seasons back theater goers
viewed for the first time a Negro
with his face whitened portray
ing a White man.
A little widow with five little
children married a widower with
six children. Their marriage was
eventually blessed with three
more little children.
One day the ex-widower was
sitting in the parlor reading his
paper when his wife rushed in
screaming, “Come quick. Your
children and my children are

Having gotten into trouble and
sent to prison, when his time was
almost served, Leroy waylaid the
warden.
“I was a houseman and gar
dener outside,” Leroy said, “and
evertime I left a job, I found it
was a good policy to get a letter
of recommendation. Will you
give me one?”
The request was, to say the j
least, highly unusual, but the
warden saw Leroy was in dead
earnest and promised to see what
he could do. Just before Leroy
was scheduled to leave the war
den gave him a letter bearing
these words:
“The bearer of this letter is;
leaving me after today. I am
satisfied.”

How could they leave me here
alone
When all my love was their to
hold?
I cradled them within my arms,
l sheltered them from storm and
cold.
Day after day I watch the road,
And see gay parties passing by;
Yet, no one stops to speak to me,
And no one seems to hear me sigh.
The summer breezes pity me,
As though the trees they murmur
low.
The nestling birds beneath my
eaves;
Alas, how soon they, too, will go.
Could I but hear them as of old;
Voices of children raised in mirth
Could I but see the cheerful glow
Os firelight gleaming on my
hearth.
Could I some friendly voices hear
And footsteps gay upon the floor,
I’d raise my head in pride again
And grieve no more.
