WOMEN
BROOKLYN ( ANP) Mrs.
Mary McLeod Bethune address
ed 1.000 persons last week at
Scholarship Night services at
Concord Baptist church.
“If the womanhood of the
United States and the world join
hands and unite in sisterhood
they could change the world,”
Bethune told her audience.
“If we could just pool our ef
f rts and forget pettiness, jeal
ousy and hate we would have
and harmony to the ends
of the world.”
The 77-year-old educator said
that education is more important
han ever for youth to succeed.
The door of opportunity is open
ing wider each for the Ne
gro youth, she observed. The most
tragic thing that could happen
would be for us not to be pre
-‘-red to fill these opportunities
when they come, she said.
The Sisterhood Club, sponsor of
the program, awarded a SSOO
scholarship to Miss Mozell Har
ris, class musician at the Girl’s
high school graduation exercises
June 25. Miss Harris, an orphan

and also plays the cello in the
orchestra. Her teacher, Eva Shi
pira, evaluated her musicianship
as equal to that of the average
professional teacher.
Miss Harris will enter Brook
lyn College’s School of Music. She
is also active with young peoples
organizations at Concord.
Special guests on the program
were Commissioner Elmer Carter
of the NY State Commission
Against Discrimination; Mrs. Hor
:ense Levisohn, principal of Girls
high school; Mrs. Laura B.
Blackwell, instructor at City col
lege of New York.
Music on the program was pre
sented by Carl Fields and Miss
Adelaide Beatner, soloists, the
Concord Choir under direction of
Wyatt Logan and John Lucas and
Miss Elaine Watkins, pianists.
