M Augustus Granville Dill, pioneer of magazine publishing who helped build The Crisis to its peak circulation in an earlier period, discusses the little-known story of Amos Fortune with James Fassett, CBS Radio Network’s producer-director and inter mission commentator for the Sunday afternoon broadcasts-of the New York Philharmonic-Symphony. For the radio concert’s Feb. 15 intermission Mr. Fassett recently prepared the life story of Amos Fortune, 18th century New England tanner who bought his freedom at the age of 59 and set a pioneering example of economic and social integration in the community of Jaffrey, N.H. America Needs More Negro Dentists NEW ORLEANS (ANP) A call for Negroes, men and wo men, to enter the field of dentis try was issued last week by Dr. A. M. Mackel, president of the National Dental association. Serving as guest speaker of the second annual refresher course for dentists at Flint-Goodridge hospital sponsored by the New Orleans Dental Society, Dr. Mackel declared that 13,000 den tists are needed to end a shortage in this country. He said there definitely is a shortage of dentists to serve Negroes. The NDA is actively work ing to open opportunities for Negro students in dentistry and to help supply America’s dental needs in the national defense. 2. Negro dentists do not dis criminate against patients because of race. 3. Dentistry is progressing in its achievements, but it needs more men and women in the profes sion. WIFE OF NEWSMAN TRIES SUICIDE ATLANTA. Ga. (ANP) Mrs. Marjorie Fowlkes, 40-year old wife of William Fowlkes. Georgia correspondent for the Pittsburgh Courier and news ana lyst for radio station WERD here, was listed ip '‘fair condition” at Hughes Spalding hospital after police and firemen rescued her from an apparent attempt at sui cide last Wednesday. Homicide detectives C. W. Jor dan and. W. S. Acree said Mrs. was rescued by radio patrolman who broke down the r«A'r door of her home at 1130 Lena Street N.W. The officers said they found her unconscious on the floor of her bedroom, with all gas jets in the house turned on. ! Carrying her to the front porch, patrolman H. K. Mueller and R. !H. Bibb administered artificial respiration until the fire depart ment arrived with a resuscitator. Police quoted Mr. Fowlkes as saying “family trouble” had ex isted between the two. Wednesday Fowlkes said, his wife had cre ated a disturbance at the radio station, interrupting his broad cast. DALLAS, Texas (ANP) Some $4,050 will be awarded by Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity in scholarships and fellowships to encourage students to seek higher training in education, Dr. Milton S. J. Wright, director of educa tional activities for the fraternity announced. According to Dr. Wright, the rules for distribution of the awards are: ' Contestants are to submit to the National Educational Office, Wil berforce university, Wilberforce, Ohio, or to the president of any local chapter of the fraternitv a an essay written on the subject: ‘Significant World Social and Scientific Outlook During the Remainder of the 20th Century.” The essay must be typewritten and should contain not less than 2,000 words and no more than 5,000 words. There will be five scholarship awards of $4lO each, and four fellowship awards of SSOO each. Deadline 'for submitting essays is May 4. Meanwhile, Dr. Wright an nounced that the annual Alpha Educational Campaign will start March 22 and end March 29.
