ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY WEAVER SAYS. . Bo >ou cross the street to avoid n black cat? Do you feel squeam ish about walking under ladders? I* 10 ”°ur unlucky number? It is? Well, cheer up you too have a lucky number! £ach month I received through the mail an advertising circular distributed by a large company. In the corner of this circular there appears a number together with the suggestion that 1 look for the following notice: “I am your lucky number. Bring me in and collect $5.00.” Needless to say I look at every illustration and read every word printed on the circular. I wasn’t one f the lucky ones this month but I’ll keep hoping. Each month I'll read the circular. I may not win $5.00 but who knows —maybe I'll run across a "bar gain item I’ve been needing a long time. And I'll bet 90 per cent of all the persons receiving these circulars examine them as faith fully as I, hoping they will get the lucky number. Now I wonder how many of you folks realize you already have one lucky number which can never be taken from you. Yours is the most important one in over 100 million! Naturally. I mean your Social Security ac count number. How many of you realize that this lucky number is the key to Old Age and Survivors Insurance protection for you and your family? That chances are you'll get much more than $5.00 from this lucky number. In fact, it has been estimated that the total stake of a young family in social security protection mavrun as high as $40,000. I know* that will come as a surprise to many of you. It cer tainly w’as a surprise to a young widow who called at my office recently. She handed me a news paper clipping telling of her hus band's death last month. He and a friend had rented a small boat and gone fishing. They ran into some bad weather and her hus band fell overboard and w’as drowned. She said her husband alw’ays carried his social security card with him in his wallet and it must have been lost when he fell overboard. This young man had more foresight than many of us. When he first obtained * his social security number he in structed his wife to put the stub or lower portion of the card in a safe place along with his other insurance policies. He also told her to be sure to take his social security card to the nearest social security field Office if anything should happen to him. This young lady remembered her husband's instructions. She handed me the stub to his card and said th«t anything she was entitled to w’ould help on her husband’s burial expenses, although she did not suppose it would amount to very much. I told this young lady we would request a certified copy of her husoand’s employment record from our Records Division in Baltimore and would notify her regarding her eligibility for bene fits. A few days later I was able to advise her that she would re ceive monthly benefits of SICS. for her self and her infant son. until he becomes 18. as well as a lump sum payment of $2lO. By the time her son becomes 18. benefits may total some $20,000! You can imagine her surprise and pleasure when she learned her social security' benefits will total much more than all A her other combined assets. This lucky number is yours, and yours alone. Use it dost lose it! But if you should lose it be sure to apply for a duplicate never apply for another origi nal number. Be sure each em ployer for whom you work copit * your name and number directly from your card. Your correct name and number .as well as the amount of wages he has pa.d you must appear on his quarterly so cial security report in order for your account to be properly cred ited. And last but not least, keep in touch with your nearest socia. security field office, and keep yourself and your family inform ed on your rights and privileges under the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Program. Take these steps to protect your benefits rights and make certain that yours Is indeed your lucky number! MIAMI TIMES. MIAMI. FLORIDA PAGE SIX ,; v< ; n > .It B ' s?.
