NEW YORK IANP) A study of Negro priests in toe United States for me past IOC years discloses a steady elevation of Negro leaders to places of re sponsibility and usefulness in the Catholic Church. The survey was made by the Rev. Albert S. Feiey, SJ. A re port on the survey was made re oently America. National Catho- I lie Weekly Review. The report covers the spar, from the eleva tion of Father James Augustine Healy to the eptscopany in 1854 to the ordination of Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, SVD as a prelate April 22. 1952. Father Feiey reports from his two-year study of Bishop Healy and other colored priests that the Catholic Church has had 68 Afro- American priests. This number i includes these born in the United States, and these like Bishop | Bowers who have come from the ‘ West Indies. All told 61 of the Negro pries’s were native Americans. Seven i came from the islands, not in cluding the five Jamaican Jesuits ordained at Weston, Mass , for mission work in Jaixnaca. The reports discloses that more than half of the Negro priests were bora in the underprivileged areas of the South. In fact 31 of the priests came from below the Mason and Dixon line, 21 from the Northwest, seven from the Midwest and two from the West. Three outstanding Negro prieits were the three Healy brothers. Bishop James Augustine Healy, bora in Georgia, who made a prey j late in 1854, his brother Father Sherwood Healy, another broth er Father Patrick F. Healy, SJ. also made excellent records in the Catholic Church. Father Sherwood Mealey, who was a doctor in common law’ in Rome, taught at the Seminary in Troy, N. Y., according to the sur vey. The third brother Father Patrick F. Healey, taught philo sophy at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. before being made vice president. He was later president of the university. He erected the main building on the campus still known as tae Healy Building, according to Father Fe iey’s survey. i An interesting revelation of this report on Negro priests is that ‘in only two cases out of the thousands did a White person re fuse to receive the sacrament from colored hands.” This ex treme case came when Father i Adrien Esnard, CICM, was sent ! to head the Scheut Mission band ' in the Philippines. The report said ne American authorities there refused to let him function as su perior of the White priests. He was shipped back to Belgium and later sent to the Congo where he did excellent work.
