Congratulations to four sets of parents: Mr. and Sirs. Peter Bethel, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bray non, (Mr. and Mrs. Yorick Kemp, and Mr. and Mrs. Na thaniel Strachan who were hon ored as Parents of the Year by the Booker T. Washington Alum ni Association at the Tuesday re union program. The Certificate of Commendation states that the award has been granted ‘’in re cognition and acknowledgement of their overcoming untold sacri fices and difficulties encountered in providing for all of their children, the benefits of a com plete high school education.” To be eligible, parents must have educated a minimum of four children. This thoughtful gesture on the part of the Booker T. Washington Alumni Association had been discussed several years ago. We are happy that it will be an integral part of all future re union programs. Mrs. Lenora Johnson returned from Nashville last Thursday where she attended the gradua tion of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Johnson Williams from Tennes see State A and 1 University and visited with her son, James, a student at Meharry Medical School. Mrs. J ohnson-Williams, mother of three children, Joseph, Gerald and Diane, completed her work in three years, graduating with High distinction, and re ceived the Counsellors’ Award. Her organizations include Alpha Kappa Mu, national scholastic society, Kappa Delta Pi, nation al education honor society, and Alpha Kappa Alpha of which she was local Anti-Basileus. She also worked as library assistant Her parents, Deacon and Mrs. Dan iel Johnson are very proud of her as are her sisters, Mrs. Alma Lu cille Crawford and Miss Geor gianna Johnson and brother, James. Her children are just rev ling in the fact that mother is home with them again. The annual meeting of Church Workers, June 11-15 at St. Aug ustine College, Raleigh, will be attended by Rev. Jarrette Cor tez Adkin, curate of St. Agnes P. E. Church. Theme for this year's meeting is “What the Church expects of me.** Work shops and discussions will cen ter about the various areas of work in the Negro parishes and missions of the Episcopal Church. The Miami community extends its sympathy to Dr. C. W. Harw irin« whose oldest sister, Miss Edith Hawkins, and Orange County teacher, died suddenly of a heart attack. The funeral is to day, Friday, June 8 at 2:30 at Mt Olive AME Church, Orlando. Her immediate survivors are her sis ters PoJonia and Rosa Lee Haw kins, one brother, Dr. G. W. Hawkins, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Jones Hawkins, and one niece, Anna Jean Bertie Hawkins. She was the daughter of the late Amos and Anna Hawkins. Mrs. Edward Braynon who at tended the graduation of her younger daughter, Gloria, from Talladega last week is enjoying her visit with relatives in Mont gomery. From there, she will go to Shrevesport, La. to attend the convention of the National Con gress of Colored Parents and Teachers meeting there next week. Remember the delightful meet ing of the Florida State Federat ed Women’s Clubs which met here in Miami several years ago? Well just multiply that by 48 and you •will have some idea of what Is m store for Miami when the national group meets here next month. Mrs. T. L. Lowrie, Sr. and her son. T. L., Jr., were present at the* (graduation of their son and brother, Charles, from the Prep aratory Dept, of the Pennsylvarda Military Institute. We understand that this will be the last gradua tion in this department The school wiU concentrate on the de velopment of the collegiate de partment. Dr. Frank Veal, former presi dent of Paul Quinn College, Wa co, Texas, was recently elected president of Allen University, Co lumbia, S. C. He succeeds Dr. Higgins who was elected to the bishopric here in Miami at the AME conference. Congratulations to two young registered pharmacists, Mrs. Elea nor Braynon Gibson and Mrs. dive Love Edwards who have opened their awn establishments. Mrs. Gibson's store is located on Third ave. opposite offices of Dr. Dazelle Dean Simpson. Mrs. Ed wards is doing business in Rich mond Heights. Charles Culmer and Irvin Cul mer are home for the summer from Fisk and Shaw Universities respectively. Their parents, Rev. and Mrs. S. A. Culmer of St. Mary's Methodist Church and their youngest brother, Harold, of BTW, are happy to have them home again. Oswald Smith spent several days in Miami with his wife, the former Doris Carey. Mr. Smith was enroute from Canada to his home in Nassau. Atty. Henry Arrington, who will deliver the commencement address at ‘the Middleton High School, Tampa, tonight, Friday, June 8, will return to Miami to make an address at a tea at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Shipp of 50th st. The affair is for the bene fit of the Building Fund of the New Mt Moriah Baptist Church, Liberty City. Magistrate Maxwell Thompson and Mrs. Thompson of Nassau were the house guests of Atty. and Mrs. Gratton E. Grave last week. The Thompsons were re turning from New Orleans where their youngest son, Frederick, was graduated from Xavier Uni versity. Young Thompson will enter Catholic University, Wash ington, D. Ohio Visitors Entertained Mr. and Mrs. Jaimes Stokes and Mrs. George W. Thomas of Cin cinnati, Ohio were house-guests of Mr. and Mrs. James Harris, 5308 Palm Bhrd., Hollywood, 71a., owners of Harris' Pit Barbecue, recently. The entire (group joined in vacationing, by motoring to Key West, later taking a flight to Nassau, Bahamas. In Nassau they stayed at Olive’s Guest House. They were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Sonney Mackey, who served delicious native dishes. Thanks again to Mr. and Sirs. C. E.
