Gore Jr., issued what amounted to an ultimatum to the faculty, staff and employees of the school, regarding their par ticipation in the bus protest in Tallahassee. Dr. Gore stated that either you are loyal to the university or loyal to something out there; cast your lot with this ship or get off. You can’t be loyal to both. He stated that participation by some of the staff was embarras sing to the university, that he therefore, wanted the faculty and staff to refrain from participa tion in the protest movement. The protest movement was started by the students of A&M after the arrest of two A&M coeds who sat beside a white woman on a city bus when there were no other seats available. This happened on the A&M - Frenchtown route which is predominately Negro. The students voted to refrain from riding the buses after the arrest of the (girls and a subse quent cross burning on the lawn of the residence where the gir’s were living. The protest quickly spread to the community and was organized by the Ministerial Al liance. Since the inception of the pro test, many university personnel have participated actively in the support of the movement. Some five weeks ago 15 or 2C active university professors, most ly key personnel, were called in separtely by the president. When asked by reporters as what went on at these meetings, these pro fessors gave a terse “no com ment.” However, it is generally held that they were given essen tially the same ultimatum *hat was given the (general body.
