League officials in New York asserted that .the Jacksonville Community Che**t had yielded to pressures by the White Citizens’ Council and the Ku Klux Klan. The Citizens Council and Klan memberhv had threatened to withdraw financial support from the annual Chest campaign, it was said, unless the Urban League chapter changed its name and disaffiliated from the nation al body. In Jacksonville, the chest's executive director, Fred Huff man denied that “ it was a ra cial issue, at all.” He declared that the 62-member executive commiteee of the Chest had voted unanimously last .Thursday to drop the League from its rolls. Mr. Huffman blamed the League’s entry “into politisc” for the committee's action. He cited the chest’s continuing support of seven other Negro agencies as evidence of the non-racial char acter of the committee’s move. Its 1955 budget of $18,219 has been paid, but no payments will be made by the chest after Jan. 1, 1957. Mr. Waring ssid the league planned to start a drive to raise $24,000. ■" ■■■-'■ 11 ■ 1 " 1 "■■■' ■■ WARE’S SHOE CUNIC Charles War*. Prop.
