Tenn. State and Maryland in Big
Game; Rattlers No. 2 in Nation
By A N !P
In what many football fans
consider the game not only of the
week, ibut of the se:son, the
mighty Tennessee State Tigers
will clash with the powerful
Maryland State Hawks Saturday
in Washington, D. C. in the Capi
tol Classic at Griffith Stadium.
This game is definitely the big
one. It completely overshadows
such good battles as Xavier
against. Florida A & M for a top
spot in the SIAC and Jackson
.against Grumbling way down
South.
As the Huddle sees it, the team
that wins the Classic will likely
fight it out with Florida A & M
for the mythical national champ
ionship. The Huddle rates Ten
nessee State No. 1, Florida A &
,M No. 2 and Maryland State No.
. 3 in its weekly baker’s dozen
rankings.
The Htwks have a one-man
gang in Johnny Samples. They
lhave a good defense and an effi
. cient off erne. The Tigers are
. awesome both on offense and de
fense. This is in ideal dish for
the football lover. The Huddle
picks Tennessee in a close one.
Down in Tallahassee the Rat
tiers face a rugged invading
X-xier Gold Rush. Xavier does
not have erymgh big guns for
Florida A and M sparklers.
Back to the:iatings. Other teams
in the baker's,dozen are Bethune-t
Cookm:n, Jackson, Grambling;
Texas Southern, Morris Brown, 1
Delaware State, Xavier, Dillard,
Prairie View, A&T, and Mississip
pi Vocational.
This season has proved to be so
topsy turvy thaJ.no team seems to
be able to assert iitself to the fare
front. There may not be a single
undefeated team by the end of
the season.
JIMMY FORD TO
FIGHT MARTINEZ
Welterweight contenders Vince
Martinez of Patterson N. J. will

title contender, defeated Miguel
Disz in his only other appearance
at tbe Beach and since .then he has
been beaten by Tony DeMarco,
the ex-champion, and wxm a de
cision over Jifinzi Nocero in his
last bout.
A talented boxer with a kayo
wallop in his right, Vince has de
feated such outstanding fighters
as A1 Chico VejarjCar
mine Fiore, and Art
53 pro bouts he b-'s scored 40-jric-

toms, knocking out 25 rivals.
Ford has never been knocked
out. He’s a rough customer who
loves to mix it with his rivals.
In his last local bout, Jimmy lost
a split decision to ex-lightweight
charm;ion Paddy DeMarco.
The Mhmi boxer has done
much of his fighting in the Latin
Amsrican countries and has com
piled a fine record south of the
oorder.
Jimmy holds a pair of victories
over Yama Bahama and recently
defeated Emilio Sanchez, the
British Honduras champion.
In just about every fight he’s
had here Ford has been forced
to shed weight, which he claims
we:kened him. However against
Martinez he will enter ring as a
natural welterweight.
