The Fifth Quarter The Sportlight On Columbus Grade Gridders Our choice for the most improv ed team of the year is for the bluejay outfit up at Our Lady of Victory. Things didn’t fare so well at the beginning of their middle weight season but after losing the fist two contests they have come back with a bang. Thd boys give the credit to the good coaching of Bill Beer who took over the reigns after the season was under way. It was just 20 years ago this week that the Victory boys were wrap ping up the league title for the school for the first time. Sacred Heart tried its best to dethrone Immaculate Conception in their annual battle but it didn’t work. Their great halfback BOB BREECH teaming with DON BEN NETT gave the IC lads some very rough moments but the splendid linework of their ‘ironmen trio’, ED DOYLE, MIKE DODD and MIKE LASHLEY, who play on both offense and defense most of the I game kept them from doing real harm. The score was 20 to 6 and I left IC with only cellar-dwelling Holy Rosary to hurdle for a clear title. While this‘top heavyweight bat tle was in progress, Rosary and St. Christopher’s were slugging it out to escape the bottom rung on the league ladder. St. Christopher’s succeeded, thanks to an intercep tion of a Rosary pass by PAUL SIPE and his ensuing 70-yard run. This made the score 20 to 13 and ended Rosary’s threat. This was Sipe's second TD of the game. We’d really like to write volumes for this column every week for we think there would he plenty of ma terial in relating many of the feats and plays that go on in the games —but there isn’t enough room. For instance, we’re sure that Paul Brown would stop and take notice of Sacred Heart’s tiny little ERNIE JOHNSON’S ability to w o in from the guard position and make a great number of his team’s tackles. And when he tackles he 'does it correctly regardless of the size of his opponents. We must add to the defensive play of the week the blocking and tackling of St. John’s JIM ZUCCHERO. ‘Zuke’ chased St. Francis’s BOB DUEMEY, who is no mean runner, for 45 yards and dropped him with a per fect ‘from behind’ tackle after Boh had slipped by the whole St. John team. Here are a few excerps from an article written in 1928 by Emerson Davis in a daily paper: “Parochial students are looking forward to the opening of the Parochial school football league. Last season the first attempt at football among the grade school lads was made and six schools had teams in the league. When the call ^was issued by Director Bill McGrath this season he received even more response. McGrath to our way of thinking has the right idea in allowing the grade school lads to play football. He feels that they are much better off playing in organized leagues. than to let them play on the back sand lots with no supervision. Then there is another advantage—foot ball is here to stay and the boys in junior high schools will be in high school next year. If they had learned the fundamentals. they would have a much better chance of making the high team.’ That game must have been played in 1927.
