We would be very grateful for volunteer helpers.dur
ing this school year in our cafeteria. If you have the time,
we assure you of a rather interesting time on the day you
give us your help. Any work done in our cafeteria is of
great benefit to our children.
Please sign and check the month, week, and day you
prefer. A big “Thank You” from the Sisters, Children,
and Mrs. Bonn.
The first week of school the
mothers of St. Aloysius School,
West Broad and Clarendon Ave
nue, Columbus, receive this let
ter asking for volunteer service.
Mrs. Gertrude Bonn takes care of
the school cafeteria. An excellent
cook she has the additional asset
of being most kind and patient
with the children. Every child in
the School has found a real friend
in Mrs. Bonn. These qualities in a
cook are essential for a good lunch
program.
Approximately one hundred six
ty meals are served each day, both
lunches and dinners. While the
mothers serve the lunches, Mrs.
Bonn goes on with dinner prepar
ations. The Sisters supervise dur
ing the dinner period.
Credit must go to the children,
too, whose efforts are also needed

serve.
This school lunch program has
existed at St. Aloysius for three
years. Previous to that, hot lunch
es were served, but not on the
government cafeteria plan.

Mrs. Schilling
Adopts Students
St. Thomas cafeteria, Columbus,
was opened in 1944 and was one
of the first schools to apply for
the National School Lunch Pro
gram aid in 1947.
The cafeteria has operated under
the same system since that time
with the help of the St. Thomas
Mother’s Club.
Mrs. A. J. Schilling has been in
charge of the cafeteria for the
past eight years having ‘‘adopted’’
the St. Thomas school children for
her family.
Her own two children have been
pupils at St. Thomas.
Her daughter, Julie still goes
to St. Thomas and goes to her
mother’s meals everyday.
With the aid of some of the old
er children of her “adopted fam
ily” and a mother from the parish.
Mrs. Schilling operates with groat
efficiency. The majority of the
children remain for lunch as the
traffic hazards around St. Thomas
school are very great for small
children.
Breakfasts are also served to the
children on first Fridays.
