SIGN OF THE GIANT PAINTER Smut Traffic Is Worst Evil Among Youths Joint Action Of Parents And Congress Urged To Combat Growing Evils NEW YORK—(NC)—Home front and Congressional action to halt what the author calls a worse traffic among American children than the narcotics trade—distribu tion of obscene pictures—is urged in an article in the latest issue of Information, monthly published by the Paulist Fathers here. 5. i I i i I I The Rev. James A. McVann, C. S.P., of St. Paul’s College, Wash ington, D. C., in a well-rounded study of how this flood of porno graphy violates the natural law and what can be done about it, said purveyors of illicit literature are sending their prospectuses to children ranging from 8-year-olds tc collegians. One purveyor sends out from 30,000 to 60,000 circulars a day. As a first step to combat this evil, he called on individuals and organizations to write their Con gressman or Senators to urge pass age of HR 5850, a bill designed to stop dealers in pornography from sending out further matter while they are on trial for a previous offense. This measure is now be fore a House Post Office and Civil Service sub committee, headed by Rep. Frank M. Karsten of Mis souri, On the home front, where Fa ther McVann says post office offi cials feel “the most telling effort can be made” in keeping unclean literature from children, the au thor proposes these steps: 1. Parents must impress on their children to consult with them be fore writing away for things ad vertised even in respectable news papers. 2. When children are canvassed by obscene advertisers, parents should at once file a complaint with the inspector at the local post office, enclosing the incrim inating literature. 3. All concerned with educa tion—teachers, principals, school boards, parent-teacher groups— should insist with municipal and state authorities that local laws against obscene literature be en forced. All States except New Mexico have such laws. They also should insist that close tabs be kept in the schools to find child ren who peddle for the major dis tributors. 4. The same educational groups should write periodic letters to the newspapers, calling on the Federal courts to deal sharply with smut dealers who use the mails. “Judges and prosecutors will attend to their work when they sense a strong public opinion against fancy jurisprudence and law enforcement,’’ Father McVann declared. Parish Decency Committee members should visit drugstores and newstands, asking them not to display or sell to children, comics that are contrary to the code of the National Organization for Decent Literature. Cooperating dealers are given a committee placard to display. School children and their parents are urged not to patronize stores which do not display the committee’s sign. Father McVann said that while the law is clear in forbidding use of the mails for obscene matter, dealers in pornography "are a persistent tribe though arrested time and again, they pay their fine and start up again.” He explained that “with a slim equipment the profits are enormous,’ and they count on a fast gain before the law overtakes them again.” Post Office officials have a special file of about 4,000 complaints against one dealer alone. His first-hand knowledge of the Far East began nearly 13 years ago, shortly after his ordination to the priesthood. He was assigned to the Kweilin Mission in China, and for a while it looked as though his experience would be confined to that area. But the Japanese invasion came, and Father Bauer was pushed along before it. He spent his “ex ile” period in Kweiyang and Kun ming, increasing his knowledge of Far Eastern geography, but what GILL. Be low is a thumb nail sketch of one of the NC correspondents writing for you, so that you may realize the background from which such dis patches are written. The Rev. Thomas J. Bauer. M.M., covers one of the busiest “cross roads” in the world—Hong Kong. The paths ot the great and the obscure, the important person and the refugee cross on this island off the southeast coast of China. Some of the most informative, and most touching stories of the day come to light there. Few are bet ter qualified than Father Bauer to get and write them. Not only is he an a cco m 1 i s ed news writer, forged in the foundry of* action and al o s unremit ting toil, but he knows well the area and the people of whom he writes. is more important, his knowledge of ar Eastern people. He return ed to Kweilin after V-J Day, and worked there until his superiors as signed him to the staff of the China Missionary Bulletin (as Eng lish editor), when the magazine be gan publication in Hong Kong in August, 1949. Certainly it is given to few peo ple to view so closely and under such vivid and dramatic circum stances so many facets of life as it is lived in Hong Kong today. Fa ther Bauer insists that his co-work ers deserve as much credit as he in capturing for the reader of the Catholic press the kaleidoscopic picture that is the Far East today. In any case, he does have scores of news sources in his “cross roads” post. ------------------o----------------- St. Augustine HNS Unit Sponsors Party Feb. 15 The Holy Name Society of St. Augustine's Church, Columbus, will sponsor a euchre and social party at the school hall, Loretta Ave., and Greenwich St., Friday, Feb. 15. at 8.30 ?. m.
