Tobias, prominent Xegro leader and an outstanding Pro! estant. told an interracial group here that he agreed with His Holi ness Pope Pius XII that the struc ture of world peace must he built upon a spiritual base. Speaking at a forum oi the Cath olic Interracial Council. Dr. Tobias described his recent audience with the Pontiff, and his experiences as a member of the United States Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in Paris. The Negro leader said he had been moved to seek an audience with the Pope because of his per sonal conviction that "problems of world peace can never be solved, permanently and completely, ex cept through the medium of spirit ual understanding.” The Holy Fa ther, he reported, "gave warm as sent to the thought that the spir itual must be back of any possible solution to our international diffi culties and problems.” Lauds Catholic Groups Dr. Tobias said that when he ex pressed to His Holiness "the warm appreciation of American Negroes for the progress in recent years in the approach to interracial prob lems on the part of the Catholic Church in this country." he had in mind "the things done by the Cath olic Interracial Councils, not only locally but through the medium of their publication, The Interracial Remeu. and through their contri- Mrs. Gerald B. March 25. at 2 p.m. He has been Abbot of St. Meinrad’s for the past 22 years, during which he built a new minor seminary and other structures for the expanding center. He is now engaged in founding a new Benedictine Ab be}’ in the northeastern part of South Dakota which will serve as mother to the four large Indian missions under the care of St. Meinrad’s. Abbot Esser is a na tive of Ridgway. 111., and a grad uate of the minor and major seminaries at St. Meinrad's. Dr. John Fehring NEW YORK—(NC)—Dr. John J. Fehring, supervisor of music for the Cincinnati. Ohio, archdiocese, was announced here as the winner of the St. Gregory Plaque for out standing services to the cause of church music. The award *is given from time to time by the St. Greg ory Society of America, an organi zation for the promotion of better music which has its headquarters in New York. A native of Cincinnati, Dr. Feh ring has been organist at the Old Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains in that city since 1908. He is profes sor of church music at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary and dean of the music department of Teachers’ Col lege.
