Administrative Board noted that "every week that passes greatly adds to the number of those who are called upon to suffer for their Faith in communist coun tries.” The Bishops said one well may ask "whether any de cade in history has been more rich in martyrdom than our own.” The Bishops said their sympa thies go out particularly to their fellow Catholics in China. They cited the fact that 77 Bishops and other heads of Sees in that coun try, including 12 Americans, al ready have been imprisoned, ar rested, expelled or otherwise im peded in their work. Rumania, “where the entire Hierarchy has been liquidated’’ Lithuania, Al bania and Poland. “In view of the sufferings to which all men of religious belief have been subjected,” the Bishops said, “we beseech our fellow citi zens to renew their prayer for all, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, who bear the heavy burden of tyr anny and are persecuted under a system of government which is the acknowledged enemy of all those decencies which have been the spe cial blessing of our own country.” The text of the statement fol lows: “Reports of the banishment of Bishop Hlouch from his Episcopal See in Czechoslovakia center our attention once more on the sad plight of the Catholic Church in that country. It is a notorious fact that Archbishop Beran of Prague has been held under house arrest for the past several years and has been subjected to countless indig nities at the hands of the commun ist government. In these prelates we are witnessing a repetition of the atrocities already visited upon Archbishop Stepinac and the other heroic Bishops of Yugoslavia, also upon Cardinal Mindszenty and Archbishop Josef Groesz of Hun gary. “In view of the new wave of ter ror which is being visited upon the Church in Czechoslovakia, we the members of the Administrative Board of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, assembled in our regular semi-annual meeting, express our deep sympathy for the Archbishop, Bishops, priests and laity of Czechoslovakia. We pray that God may support them in their suffering and strengthen them in their resistance to the forces of evil. Bishops Liquidated “Even more terrible has been the fate of the Church in Rumania, where the entire Hierarchy has been liquidated in Lithuania, whose Bishops, priests and laity were among the first to feel the full lash of the new terror in Al bania, whose smaller number of Catholics has tended to obscure the greatness of the sufferings endur ed. If in Poland the woes ol the Church have been less dramatic, equally persistent and far more in sidious have been the means used to win the people from their spir itual allegiance. “Our present sympathies, how ever, go out particularly to our fellow Catholics in China. Catholic Foreign Aid Totals Over $12,000,000 In 6 Months WASHINGTON (NC) The enormity of the mercy mission car ried on by War Relief Sercices, Na tional Catholic Welfare Conference, is reflected in an interim report on the agency’s operations from Oct. 1, 1951, to March 31, 1952. The report was submitted to the annual spring meeting of the Ad ministrative Board, NCWC. Msgr. Edward E. Swanstrom, executive director of WRS, tendered the re port.
