Sullivan I VATICAN CITY—(NO —An ap peal to the women of the world to embrace the cause of peace as a “mission from God and humanity” was made by His Holiness Pope I Pius XII as he addressed delegates from 45 nations attending the 13th International Congress of the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organi zations. Women’s work for peace today, said the Holy Father, is “the most extensive perhaps assigned to you i by Providence up to the present” and “more social and salutary” Spend Your Vacation At “Cookie” Sweetman’s Modern Log Cabins Stevenson Lake CLARE, MICHIGAN Catherine St. Columbus. Theme of the women’s meeting was “World Peace and the Respon sibilities of Christian Womanhood.’* If all women were to translate their hatred of war into “concrete action to impede war,” said the Pope, the resulting effort could not fail. The Papal address came at the close of a five-day meeting during which Catholic women discussed factors threatening the peaceful stability of nations. Among those attending were 11 U.S. delegates. W’omen’s activity, the Pope de clared, should be “aimed at wiping out hatred, forging the bonds of brotherhood between peoples, elim inating the causes of conflict, such as want, unemployment, obstacles to emigration and the like.” The Holy Father continued: “Your cry of peace, beloved daughters, is distinguished clearly from that of other women whose sincerity we are far from ques tioning, but whose cry, unfortunate ly, we often see desecrated to oth ed ends, even if it is not brought to the certainty that any invocation of peace which is deprived of the Christian concept of the world as a foundation is doomed to resound in the desert of the heart as the cry of the shipwrecked in the empty wastes of the ocean.” The Pope concluded by stating that the sentiment which leads women to abhor war will avail nothing and would never become a valid contribution to peace “if it were not transferred into a posi tive desire to restore everywhere a sense of fraternity sustained by a consciousness of a higher obliga tion of charity strengthened by justice, of which peace is the work ...” Medalist Mrs. K. ST. VINCENT de PAUL SHOP S5 E. Rich Street MA. 7487 408 W. Goodale Street Women Steer L. S. Morality, Prelate' Sa vs The role of women in determin ing morality in the United States was stressed here recently by Bish op Vincent S. Waters in an address before the biennial state conven tion of the Catholic Daughters of America. National chaplain for the group, Bishop Waters declared that wo men can wield a tremendous influ ence for good. “God created woman to be a helpmate,” he said, “but unfortu nately for Adam, our first mother. Eve, did not prove to be a proper one. After offending God herself, she was the one to propose that Adam should offend his Creator also. “The second chapter of Genesis,” the Bishop continued “gives the key to the general vocation of woman, whether she be mother or daughter, single, married or wid owed. whether she be in her ’teens or sixties.” Interpreting the Scripture pas sage “it is not good for man to be alone.’’ the prelate said that woman was created to remind man of his social nature. He declared: “Man wishes to be independent, but it is possible for him to be too independent. Thus he forgets his neighbors, neglects them, whether man or woman, his drive for “Man. whether he be Adam or the last man to be born into the world, is going to have a social consciousness because of the cre ation of Eve. Whether that Eve be his own dear mother, sister, daughter or aunt, whether she be the devoted nun who teaches him in school, or the secretary in his office or the girl he asks to be his wife, man has become conscious principally through women that he belongs to a social pattern. “It is your vocation, your duty as women to educate, to civilize, to sanctify the present and future generation of men and women. What couldn’t you do. if you wish ed, in regard to Christian styles, Christian families, Christian enter tainment? “If paganism ultimately pre vails, as it threatens, you and your sex will be the greater loser,” he warned.
