(NC) —The first woman chosen for the national Catholic Mother of the Year award has received a spir itual bouquet from later recipients of the honor. The presentation of the bouquet, on an illuminated scroll, marked the tenth anniversary of the first award, and the recipient’s 99th birthday. She is Mrs. Catherine J. Bartholome of this city. Mrs. Bartholome was chosen for the first Catholic Mother award in 1942. The award is announced an nually on the Feast of St. Monica, patroness of Christian mothers, May 4, which is also Mrs. Barthol ome’s birthday. The award is made by the National Catholic Confer ence on Family Life. Mrs. Bartholome is the mother of Bishop Peter W. Bartholome, Co adjutor of St. Cloud, and of Msgr. John N. Bartholome, nastor of St. Felix Church, Wabasha, Minn., who will observe the 50th anniversary of his ordination on May 14. The spiritual bouquet contained 37 Masses. 23 Holy Communions, 199 ejaculations, 109 visits to the Blessed Sacrament, 39 Rosaries and seven Stations of the Cross. In addition, Mrs. Bartholome re ceived personal messages from the Catholic mothers. Those who wrote included Mrs. Catherine A. Loeff ler, the Catholic Mother of 1949 Mrs. John Bauer, the Catholic Mother of 1950 Mrs. Augustine B. Kelley, who was voted the award in 1944, and Mrs. Math Lies, the Catholic Mother of 1947. Mrs. John S. Reilly of New York, president of the National Catholic Conference on Family Life, also signed the spiritual bouquet, and wrote a congratulatory note to Mrs. Bartholome. Another letter came from the Rev, Dr. Edgar Schmiedeier, O.S.B., director of the Family Life Bureau, National Catholic Welfare Confer ence. A native of Luxembourg, Mrs. Bartholome came to this country with her family when she was 11. Her first home was in Wabasha, where her priest-son is stationed. After her marriage to Nicholas Bartholome, she moved to a farm here in Bellechester. Bishop Bar tholome was her eleventh child. Dennison Nuptials Apr. 23 DENNISON Miss Helen Trolio of Dennison and Samuel Olivere Jr., of Columbus, were married at a Nuptial High Mass on April 23 in Immaculate Conception church. Miss Trolio is a graduate of St. Mary high school. The session, beginning at 8 p.m., will be the last regular meeting of the school term. Proceeds are to be used for the entertainment of the school boy patrol, the athletic teams, and the eighth grade girls who gave their« assistance in the school cafeteria. A discussion on care of the eyes is also included on the program. Officers were elected for the 1952-53 school year when the St. Ladislaus parish, Columbus, PTA met recently. The southeast Lions club presented visual aids to the school at this meeting. A Mother's Day breakfast will be held at St. Mary Magdalene school hall, Columbus,, on Sunday, May 11, following the 7:45 o’clock Mass. The Rev. MAY .9 Plan Parish Homecoming The homecoming of Our Lady of Victory parish scheduled for Friday night, May 16, at Valley Dale, is receiving added interest due to a poster contest entered by seventh and eighth grade students of St. Agatha's and Our Lady of Victory schools. Judges were the Misses Margaret Cunningham and Dorothea Greene and William H. McGrath. Mrs. William L. Zuber, co-chairman of the homecoming announced the winners. Alumnae of the high school are aiding in the work. Among them are Mrs. William Flanagan and Miss Mary Troy. The home nursing service of the Franklin County Red Cross is announcing two classes to be held in the headquarters class room at 30 E. Town street, Co lumbus. There is no charge for the courses. The ‘‘Mother and Child Care” course giving instruction in the care of the mother before the birth of the baby and care of the child during the first year, will be held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2-4 p. m., for a three week period. The class will start on Tuesday, May 13 and will end Thursday, May 29. A six lesson course in “Home Care of the Sick” will start Mon., May 19. This class will meet on Mondays p.m., for June 4. The society agreed to sponsor, a covered dish supper, in honor of the mothers, at the next regular meeting on Tuesday, May 27, at 6 p.m. Members are asked to invite their mothers. The May Crowning will take place on Sunday, May 11 at 2 p.m. Nancy Migoni will crown and Ger aldine Berlendis will be the attend ant. It was announced that the annual Corpus Christi procession will be held on Sunday, June 15 at 4 p.m. Plans for the coming spring fes tival were discussed. The event is scheduled for June 29. COSHOCTON The Spalding club of Sacred Heart parish will hold its next meeting on Tues day, May 13, with Miss Ann Ker rigan acting as hostess. The book, “Southwest Corner”, was re viewed by Miss Helen Gorman at the April 29 meeting when Mrs. L. Sulcer was hostess. Douwes-Schmidt, a well-known Dutch novelist who writes under the name of Willy Corsari, has been received into the Catholic Church. C. (NC) The first Negro ever named Catholic Mother of the Year for North Car olina will be honored at a Pon tifical Mass here May 4. winding up the convention of the North Carolina Laymen’s Association and the regional congress of the Con fraternity of Christian Doctrine. She is Mrs. Stephen V. Bonner, a convert whose seven children in clude a son studying for the priest hood and a daughter who is a member of the Oblate Sisters of Providence. Mrs. Bonner, a resi dent of Washington, N.C., was re ceived into the Church more than 25 years ago by the Passionist Fa thers. Bishop Vincent S. Waters of Raleigh presented an illuminated plaque to North Carolina s Catho lic Mother for 1952 at the May 4 Pontifical Mass. She was also to be honored at the May 3rd evening session of the joint convention in the main ballroom of the Washing ton Duke Hotel. An all-white committee of five leaders of the Christian Home and Family organization named Mrs. Bonner for the mother of the year title. Eligible for nomination were Catholic mothers who are practical Catholics and exemplify by good example and character the qualities of devoted Catholic moth erhood.
