Describing works of charity as “shining gems in the Mystical Body of Christ,” the Pontiff said if fol lowed with perseverance, charity leads directly to holiness. The Pope also referred to the apostolic nature of the work of the Vincentians, declaring that it in volves relieving temporal as well as spiritual needs. “Whoever should relieve materi al misery solely to sati fy an innate sense of compassion accomplishes only a purely human work,” he declared. “The Christian goes and must go further. He must feel that higher piety which is satisfied on ly when it has given God to the soul.” The Pope added that the Vin centians, by adhering strictly to their constitution, could promote social justice by elevating the humbler classes. He cited the good results of workers assistance cen ters, schools for adults, employ ment centers, and summer camps for youth. -------------o--------- Nuns" Vows, Garb Are Ruled Illegal ST. JOSEPH. Mo. (NC) The Circuit Court in Missouri has ruled generally against nuns teach ing in public schools. The ruling was made in the case of Berkhorn v. Reorganized School District No. 8. The sisters involv ed taught no religion during the school week, but confined their teaching to prescribed secular sub jects. There were no religious em blems or insignia in the schools. Regardless of these facts, the court ruled that the vows of the nuns and their garb disqualified them as public school teachers. The Sisters were not defendants in the case but only the school board and the school officials. Prior to the Berghorn case rul ing, school officials in some other Missouri.areas were notified that the contracts under which their nuns have taught in public schools would not be renewed for the next school year. Eleven nuns in Osage County gave notice they will be unavail able as public school teachers next fall. In two Cole County school dis tricts Sisters of Notre Dame will not return to teach next year. In one district contracts will not be renewed by Sisters of the Most Pre cious Blood, although it was said no general withdrawal was plan ned. -------------------o------------------- Name Dormitory for Pope CLEVELAND (NC) The nearly-completed residence hall at John Carroll University here will be known as Pacelli Hall, in honor of Hts Holiness Pope Pius XII.
