Psychoanalysis, Materialism Not Linked, Ph vsician Asserts ATLANTIC (TTY. N. (NC) It is entirely possible to divorce psychoanalytic techniques from the materialistic philosophy with which they are so often associated, the Guild of Catholic Psychiatrists was told at its annual meeting here. This statement was made by Karl Stern, M.D., of McGill Uni versity in Montreal. Dr. Stern is the author of the popular autobi ography "Pillar of Fire.’’ Dr. Franz Alexander, director of the Chicago Institute of Psycho analysis. said that personal respon sibility for human actions must be required of all individuals if so ciety is to continue to exist. This is true irrespective of whether the motivating force of the activity is regarded as conscious or uncon scious. Dr. Alexander added. Dr. Lawson Lowry, former presi dent of the American Orthcpsychia tric Association, gave additional ev idence of the necessity of requir ing personal responsibility for hu man activity. Other speakers included Dr. Francis Gerty, director of the psychiatry department at the Uni versity of Illinois, and Dr. George M. Raines, senior psychiatrist of the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. Sheen has been voted an “award for special achievement’’ fn the first television poll conduct ed by the editors of The American Weekly. The award was made for his regular Tuesday night television program “Life Is Worth Living.” The May 25th issue of The Amer ican Weekly will cover the story of the award to Bishop Sheen and 11 other personalities and programs in television. The awards were determined by 8 poll of television editors of the 22 newspapers which distribute The American Weekly with their Sun day issues. White, a senior at St. Michael’s College here, has been named a winner of one of the Ful bright scholarships. He will go to England this fall to study Euro pean history at the University of Bristol. NEW YORK—(NC)—Miss Paul ette Hamway, of the College of Mount St. Vincent, has been award ed a Fulbright scholarship in the field of chemistry. She will study at the University of Lyons. (NC) Seemingly deadlocked after two weeks of effort by federal and state mediators, negotiators reach ed an agreement for settling a strike by 1.000 employes in a ball bearing manufacturing plant here follow ing two parish hall meetings. The Rev. Martin F. Dolan, pastor of St. Maurice’s Church, called the apparently deadlocked union and management representatives to gether in his parish hall. After opening the meeting with a prayer, he left. The next day the negotia tors met again in the hall, and Fa ther Doran opened the session with prayer. That afternoon the agree ment was announced. Canadian Solon* To Probe Immorality In Literature OTTAWA (NC) The Canad ian Senate has established a com mittee to investigate publication and distribution of indecent liter ature. The move was sponsored by Sen ator J. J. Doone, Liberal from New Brunswick. He declared there was an overwhelming demand in Can ada for a moral clean-up and that drastic action is necessary to cleanse objectionable books and pictures. McCor mick. 71 university rector, who has received a number of anonymous telephone calls threatening his life. Extra guards have been assigned to the university's Curley Hall, wher Bishop McCormick resides. City police cruisers have been mak ing special trips around the cam pus. Bishop McCormick said he re ceived the phone calls nightly for almost a week. SOUTHOF WHITTIER FISH POND 3 High School GirL At Death’s Door Receives Diploma LA CROSSE. Wis—(NC) A prize she diligently sought in life has come on her deathbed to Mar ilyn Doerrc. Stricken with an in curable disease, the girl was pre sented with her diploma from Aquinas High School here on her 17th birthday because her doctors doubt she will live until the grad uation exercises are held. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Doerre, who have five other children ranging in ages from 15 years to 15 months, th** girl was stricken on Ash Wednes day, February 27, two days aftc, she attended the school’s Mardi Gras dance. Doctors, even special ists from Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn., have been unable to diag nose the disease, but are agreed it is incurable. The girl suffers from constant and severe pain, w’hich she has told her parents she has trans formed into an offering for the return of lapsed Catholics to the Church. For several weeks, she has been blind. His Sixth Term Most Rev. William D. O'Brien (above), Auxiliary Bishop of Chi cago, who was reappointed to his sixth term of five years as pres ident of the Catholic Church Ex tension Society of the United States, according to word receiv ed from the Sacred Consistorial Congregation in Rome. Since 1907, Bishop O'Brien has been associated with the Society, which is a pontifical institution. His experiences are described in "The Memoirs of a Beggar," ap pearing in Extension Magazine.
