Our Bishops Speak, edited by Reverend Raphael M. Huber. Mil waukee. Bruce, 1951. The official record of religious writing, thinking and leadership of the past three decades is pre sented to us 82 documents. These statements have either been made by the Bishops assembled in conference or have been issued as resolutions and statements of the administrative Board of the National Catholic Welfare Con ference. This is the first hook of its kind since The National Pasto rals Of The American Hierarchy, edited by the late Monsignor Guil day in 1923. The documents show us the remarkable foresight which has been displayed by our Bishops. We are made keenly aware of how little attention has been paid to these words of wisdom. In ad dition to the Bishops’ pronounce ments, a complete list of the mem bers of the N.C.W.C. admini strative board during the past thirty years is given. A fine index makes this a very useful refer ence book. Caholic families would do well to add this book to their home libraries Adventures in Two Worlds, by A. J. Cronin. A VIP, as most people know, is the service designation for a "Very Important Person”—Usually some official dignitary who is either passing through or stopping over at a base. A PIP Is a pre-induction pro gram. Hundreds of them have been held in Dioceses and parishes across the country to prepare young men for the spiritual, emo tional and physical adjustments of a quick wrench into military serv ice. These youngsters are 1952’s very important, persons—soon to man the nation's first lines of de fense. PIP’s aren’t for pipsqueaks who will readily knuckle under to the bad influences always found at work in the military. They’re de signed for the manly youth who if properly guided will serve well both his country and a Very Im portant Person indeed—his God. Chaplains, officers from nearby military installations, doctors and psychiatrists team up at PIP’s to give the prospective inductee the dope about military life. Outlined In Booklet Papa of the PIP is a booklet en titled “Greetings!” Its cover pic ture show's Uncle Sam giving a bear-grip handshake to a shocked and somewhat confused young in ductee. Issued by the National Catholic Community Service in Washington, the booklet gives the inductee the facts about service life in breezy, entertaining style. CYO groups and the Young Christian Workers were among Catholic organizations to order copies of “Greetings!” The booklet was included in a pre-induction syllabus for high school teachers issued by the Department of Edu cation. National Catholic Welfare Conference. “Greetings!” is must reading for prospective servicemen. Author of the much-sought booklet is the Rev. Thomas J. O’Donnell, C.S.C. Scores of letters praising "Greet ings!” have poured into NCCS headquarters in Washington. They prove one thing about the PIP booklet. The first objective will be the North London church of Our Lady of Willesden, the site of a medie val shrine to which many pilgrims went between the 12th and 16th centuries, King Henry VIII among them. The shrine was especially fa mous for the miraculous cures from blindness. II ill Stop At Priory After calling at another London center—More House, in the Crom well Road, where there is a fa mous pre-Rcformation statue of Our Lady of the Assumption—the pilgrims will all visit the pre Reformation priory at which in the 13th century Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock in the Scapular Vision. Then they will go on to another Carmelite shrine, that of Our Lady of Hartley, from where the road will turn to Canterbury and Our Lady Undercroft. From Canterbury the pilgrimage will visit the shrines of Our Lady of Consolation at West Grinstead and Our Lady of England at Stor rington. On the following morning the pilgrims will see Salisbury w here it is said there is a piece of the blue robe of Our I .adv in a cas ket at the top of the Cathedral spire. Mass next morning will be at Buckfast Abbey, where twentieth century monks rebuilt with their own hands the great mediaeval bey Church of Our Lady. The Time The Feast Of The Week Since 1726 July 14th has been observed as the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It commemorat es the appearance of the Mother of God to St. Simon Stock and the presentation of the brown scapular. No doubt you were given the brown scapular the day you made your First Holy Communion. If you are not wearing the scapular now be sure to wear the scapular medal. Devotion to the Blessed Virgin always brings rich rewards. Some people who cannot wear the scapular during the day, slip it on the last thing before they hit the sack. The good saint was a British monk who became Bishop of Winchester. He was a humble soul and stated that he v anted to be buried outside his cathedral so that the rain from eaves would run onto his grave. That they did, and so did the rain. When one of his successors thought he ought to dig up the remains and put them in a nice dry spot in the cathedral sanctuary, it rained for 40 days, so they left St. Swithin where he was.
