KRAMER, SR Sports As the Pros and All Stars are getting fans football minded this evening, high school gridders in the city and Diocese of Columbus are preparing to open initial drills next week. Not too long after this inauguration another group of young pigskin warriors will don the helmets, shoulder pads and other football equipment in prepara tion for a season of thrilling games. Reference is made no less to ihe lads ot the atholic grade schools of the city of Columbus. Ljjst week's announced schedule revealed that the date for weighing in the teams is just about five weeks away which means that school and practice begin in the not too far distant future. Last year, teams from some 27 schools took part in the leagues under the supervision of the CYO and at least that many are expected this season. The teams begin regular play the first week of October but some of them will be away before that^The CYO office has revealed that the grade school leagues uill again participate in the NCCS program at Chilli cothe Veterans Hospital by playing Sunday afternoon games there. The official announcement of this will be made at a later date but the games will probably begin late in September a week or so before the regular season opens. This program has always been a treat for both players and veterans—they really look forward to it. Manager Keane, a St. Louis product of the Vincent ian Fathers school, was perfectly at ease as he gave the assembled youngsters all their desired infor mation on the game of baseball. Then, with Charlie Kress, Floyd Melliere, Tom Keating, Mo Mozzali and Danny Lynch, he went out to the diamond and demonstrated some of the fundamentals of the game the delight of the kids. John was visibly touched at the Camp night game when the kids presented hiwith a beautiful Crucifix made in the handicraft shop at the Camp. Camp Night Bits Scene at the Red Bird Stadium the crowd of 1731 was one of the largest turnouts of the current season and all were treated to a real game of ball Bishop Ready was on hand to en joy the game the Knights of St. John and the Knights of Columbv plus the Joanettes and the Catholic War Veterans did themselves proud as they strutted on the field before the game one problem arose when the CWV’s were informed only three minutes ahead of time that there was no flag pole to raise the flag on. They went right on and few people were the wiser Camp buglers blew the flag call for the vets during the pre game ceremony the Red Birds who had visited the Camp were made honorary counsellors at the Boys’ Camp. And, for the first time in many years, there will be no coaching changes at the ten football-playing schools. All teams will be guided by the men who led them last sea son. Richard F. Dodd, Director of Elementary School Athletics. The association will be open to any high school or college boys not participating in interscholastic sports. Members will be given a course in games rules by local high school coaches and will be certified after examination.
