While being conservative, the Church does not try to frustrate the creative instincts of artits, the Cardinal said. “Many styles o/ architecture are now used for ecclesiastical build ing which conform to present-day standards and requirements but which would not have been the work of artists and architects in centuries past,” he stated. Over 70 selected works by liv ing Catholic artists and craftsmen ar? being featured during the monthlong exhibition at the Royal Institute of British Architects. They include paintings. Sculptures and the works of silversmiths. —-..—---------o---------- Novena Al Carmel The novena in honor of St Therese which began yesterdaey (Thursday) at 4 at the Carmel of th? Ed ward E. Swanstrom. director of War Relief Services National Catholic Welfare Conference, has declared Msgr. Swanstrom is now visiting relief centers in Europe. ‘It is impossible to describe the true dimensions and hopelessness nf the situation,” the Monsignor said in a message read to the 4.000 delegates attending the conven tions of the National Conference of Catholic Chanties, the Society nf St. Vincent de Paul and the Apos tieship of the See here. The pre late asserted: “I have just completed visits to’ refugee camps Berlin. Vienna. Salzburg, Munich. Nuremberg and Giessen, and was shocked by the steadily worsening conditions. I was amazed at th? constant flow of new refugees from the Soviet zones, where persecutions increase daily. “Berlin reminds me of the dis placed persons camps I saw right after the end of the war. I visited an abandoned airplane factory in Berlin and was astounded at the need for caring for these unfortu nates who, at the risk of their lives, escaped to Berlin and are hoping to move into the western zones of Germany. “I saw 2,000 of 15,000 men, women and children who sought haven in Berlin just. this past month—saw them actually sleep ing on piles of straw on a cold, stone floor. 1 .story! at lhe recep tion center watching 500 more of these refugees being added. “You can well imagine the prob 1cm these conditions pose, in view of the presence already of some 9,000.000 expellees, another 1,000, 000 escapees and 250,000 refugees in Germany when the Internation al Refugees Organization closed down its operations early this year. Urges Continued U. S. Aid “It was my hope that with the outpouring of United States char ity to these people over the years, there would be some evidence of a decrease in the need of assistance I cannot overemphasize the situa lion resulting among these refu gees from living long years in ref ugee camps. The local welfare agencies cannot possibly cope with the problem without continued American assistance. “Even more tragic is the hope lessness of so many of these peo ple from whom immigration oppor tunities to the United States, Can ada and Australia have been cut off. When the U.S. Displaced Per sons program ended, it destroyed the last ray of hope and resulted in widespread despair. “1 now am convinced that more than ever United States leadership through special emergency legis lation is imperative and 1 beg you to appeal to th? assembled leaders and participants in your confer ence to do all in their power to bring this about. 1 can think ot no more important contribution at this time not only for the weliar? of refugees, but lor the peace and security of the whole world.” Member of Holy Rosary Parish) 17*0 Mooberry It. And this is just what the Dispersion did The seven books mentioned above form part of the so-called Septuagint, a translation of the Old Testament into Greek which was begun about the middle of the third century B.C. and which very quickly be came the Bible of extra Palestinian Judaism. In the Septuagint. it is important to note, the seven are not a kind nf appendix or after thought they are interspersed among th? others with no hint that they were considered to he of a different, non inspired character. Some Definition* Judaism did in the end get around to defining the canon to declaring that thrs? hooks, and these alone have God as their au thor. This was done by the Synod of .lamnia which was held about 90. 100 A D. On this occasion, the sev en bonks were excluded from the list of sacred writings. But in the meantime something had happened which voided the decision of all authority. Chiist had come and es tablished his Church the Church had supplanted the synagogue and God’s voice was no longer heard in the responses of the Rabbis. Hence it was from Christ and his Church, and not from the Synago gue. that Christians were to learn what was Scripture And what did Our Lord and flic Apostles answer to the question.' There was no explicit statement, since at the time none was called for. But the Apostolic teaching was dear from the fact that the Bible of the early Church was the Greek Septuagint. not the Hebrew Scriptures This is absolutely in controvertible. Bv far the great majority of the Old Testament quo tai ions found in the New follow the Septuagint rather than the He brew I'he few exceptions are re stneted almost entirely to the Gos pel according to St Matthew which constitutes a special case which we cannot enter into here Now it will be remembered that in the Septuagint the seven books are so intermingled with the nlh ers that there is not the slightest question ot their scriptural charac ter If. however. Christ or his Apostles had taught that they were not scripture but merely pious reading it would have been th? duty of the Church to warn the faithful against falling into a fate ful error She would have had tn say: “Re nn your guard her?. Undeniable Allusions Bur of the existence of such a warning there is not the slightest shred of evidence. Quite the con trary. While the New Testament contains no explicit quotations from these books (neither does it quote all lhe others) there are un deniable allusions especially to Wisdom and Ecclesiasticus. And th? Fathers and ecclesiastical writ ers of the first and second cen tunes quote all of them as scrip ture In short, either the Church led the faithful into error, or the seven books are sacred and inspir ed. It is true that in laler centuries, a voice is raiseed here and there in protest against the acceptance of the seven Not the least was that of St. Jerome, who in this matter was too much impressed by his Jewish teachers, but even this saint had his doubts and hesita tions as the interested reader can see in the essay “St. Jerome and the Canon” tn he found in the re cently-published .4 Monument to St. Jerome. The Church did not al- IOMa»t A* Bible ersions Explained low herself to be disturbed in her teaching by isolated private op inions to the contrary. The question became actual again at the time of lhe Reforma tion when the Reformers, after considerable backing and filling, finally decided to exclude the books from their Bibles, and Pro testantism has since followed suit. The reason for doing so must in the last analysis be that they were rejected by the Jewish doctors in the first century after Christ But then the question must he faced who gives us our Bible, Chrjft or the Synagogue? o----------------- 26 (dub Schedule* ’’EJmp’s Open House" Tomorrow The 26 Club of St. Augustine’s church. Cardinal Stresses Need Of Europe’s Unification STRASBOURG. France (Radio. N(’)—The Dean of the Sacred Col lege of Cardinals has reminded Europe that the time is short and that it must act in order to gain strength through unity. His Eminence Eugene Cardinal Tisserant. French born Secretary of the Sacred Oriental .Congregation, voiced this reminder in a radio ad dress which affirmed the interest of the Holy Father in the various moves toward European unity. The Cardinal came here to attend the opening session of the Council of Europe and the formation of a constitutional convention to study plans for a European federation. The Cardinal’s address came in the wake of a discourse by His Holiness Pope Pius XII who called on Europe to let bygones be by gones and urged Catholics to help create the proper climate for gen uine European unification. Today's Fears “The fear that today‘grips so many hearts.” the Cardinal said, “arises from the difficulties which our world meets in attempting to bring about a stable balance be tween the great social forces and to organize an economic system of ever widening boundaries which tie all continents into a closer sol idarity with every passing day “If the Pontiff has voiced his in terest in this new session of the Council of Europe, it is because time presses. Europe must act. Eu rope must realize the importance of the hour. Without closer cohes ion the efforts of European coun tries are in danger of remaining fruitless. United, they are still to be reckoned with. It is not only yesterday that union has created strength.” Echoing the Holy Father’s thoughts, the Cardinal then point ed out that what is at stake is not merely a material union. Customs pacts and economic agreements are of immense practical and per sonal importance, he said, and no body realizes this better than the minister who is connected with steel-coal agreement.” This was a reference to Robert Schuman, French Catholic Foreign Minister, who conceived the idea of a Euro pean six nation coal and steel com nninity. Freeing Men "Religious faith.” Cardinal Tiss erant continued, “does not impair the proper evaluation of conditions which can render man’s life easier and happier. On the contr j, re ligious faith, by training man to judge all goods according to a fuller scale of values, frees man from that over-eagerless in looking for immediate results which is the cause of so much unbridled com petition and the ensuing conflicts Following his stay is Strasbourg, Cardinal Tisserant went to Paris w here he was decorated by Presi dent Vin-ent Auriol with the in signia of a Grand Officer of the French legion of Honor.
