throughout Ireland in recent years,
according to a report presented
here in the League of Prayer
which is working for his eventual
canonization.
The report was presented to a
convention of the League presided
over by Archbishop John F. Al
ton of Armagh, Primate of All
Ireland.
According to Msgr. Francis
Stokes, of Drogheda. Vice Postu
iator of Blessed Oliver Plunkets
cause, 25,000 persons visited the
shrine in that town where the head
o( the martyr, put to death in 1681,
is preserved. He said the pilgrims

But there is one thing which I
do think I ought to urge upon my
readers: that this is very specially
a time for earnest prayer for a
right decision at the ballot box,
and for divine guidance upon the
President and the other officials
who are there selected
This is not merely an election
ol i President of the United States
It is also an election in which a
world leader will be chosen. Under
the Providence of God. the main
material burden has been laid
upon this country of saving man
kind from the abominable philos
ophy and cruel slavery of Com
munism
This means that not only the fu
ture of Americans, but the future
of countloss other millions in
Ieluding the Russian people them
selves—is involved in the, fateful
decisions which our next Presi
dent will make.
Canada will care what he does.
South America will care. Europe
and Asia and Africa and the is
lands of the eas will care. Our
first problem, then, is to select the
best man and the best party. Our
.‘econd is to make as certain as we
can that the blessing and wisdom
of God will descend upon the Pres
ident and the Congress in the cru
cial years ahead.
Voting has always been a sac
red thing, however much some

ed the word “sacred" out of shape
and meaning. But 1 doubt that it
has ever been as sacred as now.
If you have never prayed before
voting, pray this time. And con
tinue to pray, for the government
will need prayers desperately.
But pray serenely. Pray with
confidence. Pray as a child prays
when he asks his mother tor a
glass of water. The child knows his
mother is good, and loves him. We
know that God is infinitely good
and loves us boundlcssy. Pray
quietly, then, and pray with sub
mission Do not ask God to elect
your candidate Ask him to elect
the right candidate.
And ask Hun to guide that can
didate.
We do not need to be afraid It
is difficult lor us. earth bound as
we are, to keep 1 irmly and con
stantly in mind the presence and
power of God. God will give us
the right President it we beg Him
humbly and honestly to do so And
He will show that President the
right things to do.
If God sent, as He did, a Don

dom in a critical hour if God sent,
as He did, a Joan of Arc to lead
lhe Armies ol France when all
seemed lost, then why should we
doubt that if we pray. He will
scud us the right man, and guide
that man aught, in the present
great struggle against His enemies,
who are ours also?
The Catholic Digest survey has
shown us a heart lifting fact
that 99 percent ol all adult Amer
icans believe in God. That being so,

a city for one just man. will He not

Let us approach this hour, then,
on our knees. That is my vote a
vote for prayei before and after
voting.

Prelate Warns Against
Reds' Peace Congress
LILLE. France (NC)—French
Catholics have been warned against
participating in the forthcoming
Vienna Peoples’ Congress for
Peace by His Eminence Achille
Cardinal Lienart, Bishop of Lille.
The Congress has been organized
by communists and is to be used
as a Red propaganda weapon, the
Cardinal wrote in a pastoral letter.
It has been widely advertised
throughout France and efforts are
being made to enlist the support of
Catholics, especially members of
Pax Christi, international Catholic
peace movement.

Red Printing Plant
FULDA, Germany—(NC)—Cath
olic organizations in the Diocese of
Fulda have protested the printing
in this city of practically all com
munist weekly publications of
Western Germany.
‘‘Every believing Christian
must consider it a scandal that the
center of this Catholic area har
bors the printing headquarters of
the communists and their fellow
travelers," writes the Bonuifatius
bote (St. Boniface Messenger) Ful
da diocesan weekly.
The Diocese of Fulda has just
marked its 200th anniversary. Ful
da Cathedral where the German
Bishops gather for their annual
meetings, contains the tomb of St.
Boniface. Apostle of the Germans.
The Catholic Workers’ Move
ment :n Fulda, also protesting
against the communist printing
plant, calls attention to the Holy
Office decree of July 13. 1949.
which not only prohibits member
ship in the Communist Party but
also bars from the Sacraments
those who knowingly and freely
“publish, read or disseminate
books, newspapers, periodicals or
leaflets in support of communist
doctrine and practice.”
