Opposition to the appointment of a Catholic has been voiced by Bishop Otto Dibelius of Berlin, head of the Evangelical Church in Germany. Although the German ambassa dor to the Vatican traditionally has been a Protestant, Catholic leaders have demanded that one of their co-religionists be named because of “the growth of the Catholic population in West Ger many. —.----------- o----------------- K.C. Details about this new discovery were given in FOsscrvatore Ro snano in an article written by an Italian woman archeologist Prof. Margherita Guarducci of the Uni versity of Rome. She also stated that a rough drawing, believed to represent St. Peter, has been dis covered close to the inscription. In her article she declared it probable that results oi further studies regarding the ven eration of St. Peter during the first centuries following his death will be published soon. Confirms Tradition The reported findings serve to furnish further scientific proof for what has always been Christian tra dition: that the Prince of the Ap ostles, after dying a martyr's death in the year 84 or 67, was buried at a spot on Vatican Hill which since that time, without interrup tion. has been held sacred and has beci\venerated. This spot is today beneath the Papal Altar of St Peter’s Bascilica. a According to the archeologist’s KDort. the inscription dates back fiorfhe latter part of the third cen atev- This means that it was made tatfore Constantine, the first Christ ngO emperor, in |he fourth century ai nit the bascilica over the tomb Uf the Apostle, which, in the six teenth century, gave way to the present structure. -----------------o----------------- Red Italian Deputy Conies Back To Faith ROME (Radio, NC) A com munist deputy dramatically told the chamber of deputies here that he had returned to his Catholic Faith and renounced membership in the Communist Party. Luigi Silipo, Red deputy from Catanzaro, at the samp time .sub mitted his resignation as member of parliament. But a majority of the deputies voted to retuse his resignation and to keep him in office. Only the communists and left-wing socialists voted for his resignation. ‘‘Religious convictions arrived at after a long spiritual struggle no longei allow me to battle in the ranks of the Communist Party,” Mr. Silipo's letter to the president of the chamber of Deputies said. A teacher by profession. Mr. Silipo has long been active in the interests of the lower classes, par ticularly the workers. He actually surprised many when he came out as a communist candidate several years ago. While non-communist circles ex pressed surprise at Mr. Silipo’s sudden renunciation of the party, they said it is not hard to under stand his case. They point out that the deputy’s early background was not particularly anti-religious, hut rather one of indifference to re ligion with, perhaps, a slight tinge of anti-clericalism. It is pointed out that of late Mr. Silipo had absented himself from parliament and the communists themselves had begun to suspect him. They had sidelined him in many of their important activi ties. Mr. Silipo’s bolt from the Italian Communist Party is the first de fection of a prominent member in almost two years. For Quick Results Use Want Ads 15 3 X’. 2x sc FOR YEAR! If Catholic Bishops, priests and laymen are the first on the enemies' lists of proscription, is it not because our Holy Church, today as always, stands as a bul wark against those who would de stroy religion and the practice of justice and charity among men? Is it not because the Church is the most powerful defender, against the new barbarism, of ail the gams of 2.000 years of Christian civili zation? Is it not because the Church, faithful to its divine com mission, is the uncompromising custodian of the Truth, which saves and sets men free? “These are sad but glorious days for the Church of Jesus Christ.
