On all three major sport fronts, Diocesan high school teams compiled impressive records during 1952. Leading the pack were two Columbus teams, Aquinas and St. Char les. The Irish won a total of five games on the way to the Central District title, defeated Toledo Clay 52-32 in the Northwest Regional but lost to Cincinnati Withrow 61-52 in the State tournament in Columbus. Other Diocesan teams also ran up outstanding regular season and tourney records. Marion St. Mary succeeded Columbus St. Charles as Central Catholic League kingpins with a 7-0 loop record. OHIO THE CATHOLIC TIMES, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1952 1952 A Great Sports Year For Diocesan Schools Aquinas And St. Charles Lead squad included Kilbury, Gunder, Fitzpatrick, Miller, Fritz Ritter and Joe Gilmore of Columbus Rosary, Ed Plank of Columbus St. Charles and Sal Nocera of Columbus Holy Family. Finally, stars of eight cities were named to the first annual Cath olic Times’ All-Diocesan team. Hon ored were Sorohan, Burkely, Fitz patrick*, Gunder, Martin Walker of Somerset Holy Trinity, Barney Lawless of Dover St. Joseph and Virg Blakely of Mt. Vernon St. Vincent (who set a new Knox Coun ty scoring mark for sophomores with 451 points). Baseball On the diamond, Columbus dominated the Central Dis- teams trict scene with Aquinas copping the A title and St. Mary the B. The Terriers whipped Columbus North 2-0 in the district champion ship game and beat Lima South 7-5 in the opening game of the region als. However, they were blanked 6-0 by Galion in the regional fi nals. St. Mary decisioned Bremen to capture the district title after earlier wins over Reynoldsburg and Carroll. South Zanesville de railed the Ramblers 6-2 in the re gional. Two other Diocesan teams Zanesville Rosecrens and New Lex ington St. Aloysius—advanced to the finals of the Eastern and Southeastern District tourneys. Columbus St. Charles' always tough nine wrapped up four differ ent championships during the Spring and Summer months. The Carolians copped the Cen tral Catholic League title with a 5-1 record took the Summer High School League regular season pen nant with a 12-2 mark captured the playoff championship with two straight victories and, while play- John Fantin ing under the banner of Scioto post, finished up by grabbing the 12th District American Legion championship The successful Cardinals were sparked to all these honors by the pitching of the sensational Joe Ro tondo and the slugging of Mike Grennan. One Diocesan product also set an enviable mark in the collegiate baseball world. Jim O'Neill, mer St. Charles baseball and ketball star, was named to the American squad picked by American Association of College Baseball Coaches after he had pitched his Holy Cross college team to the national championship. Football Columbus St. Charles dominated the Diocesan high school football scene. After winning nine of ten games, which carried them to the City Catholic aryl Greater Columbus championships, the Cardinals were ranked 17th in the State in the fi nal United Press high school poll. Members of the St. Charles team were the only boys in the Diocese rating mention on any All-Ohio squads. Dick Wroblewski, brilliant end, was awarded a 3rd team post on the United Press team and hon orable mention on the Associated Press squad. Baumann was given an honorable mention on the AP team and was also selected to play in the annual Ohio High School All-Star game next Summer Can ton. Zanesville Rosecrens capped an impressive sports year with an un defeated grid team, the only one in the Diocese. The Bishops tallied 234 points while running over sev en straight opponents and were one of the few teams mentioned in final UP state-wide ratings. John Fantin, Dennison St. Mary's fine halfback, outscored St. Charles' Grennan for Diocesan scoring honors. Fantin tallied 23 touchdowns and 14 conversions to finish with 152 points. Here And There In minor sports. Aquinas added its third Central District champi onship when the Terrier hnksmen tied with Circleville for the golf title. New Lexington St. Aloysius cli maxed an informal grid season by announcing that it would enter the Tri-County Six-Man League next fall. Newark St. Francis is already a member. Two coaching changes were made the Diocese with Jack Hogan replacing Ralph Hinger as basketball mentor at Mt. Vernon St. Vincent and Paul Drotovich succeeding Dave DePage at Denni son St. Mery. The Fifth Quarter Sportlight On Columbus Grade Schoolers Another fine year of CYO-spon sored Catholic elementary athletic competition goes into the books next week with the record showing that ten schools grabbed champion ship honors in different sports dur ing the past twelve months. A balanced program was again provided for the youngsters, with football, basketball and baseball leagues for boys and basketball and baseball for girls. In addition, the annual track meet was renewed and a swimming meet inaugurated for boys. St. Cyprian. St. Agatha and St. Catharine ended the season as boys’ cage champs while St. Dom inic grabbed off the honors in the girls’ division. St. Cyprian added to its prestige by u inning the city and Diocesan championships. The East Side boys defeated Newark St. Francis for the latter title, thus winning the Mission Trophy. Earlier, they had received the Aquinas Alumni Tro phy for copping the city title. St. Ladislaus gained the St. Charles Alumni Trophy for win ning the tournament championship of Columbus. Immaculate Conception boys splashed to the Boys' Division Swimming Meet which wes revived this year and held at the K of pool after a long lay-off. in all, 17 schools participated in the event. St. Agatha nosed out Sacred Heart for the Boys’ Track Field Championship which held at Aquinas for the first in 12 years. and was time Immaculate Conception racked up its second title of 1952 on Me morial day when its baseball team took the city championship. Other league champs were St. Ladislaus and St Mary Magdalene. In girls' softball, St. John the Evangelist emerged as city champs after disposing of the other league winners, Holy Rosary and St. Dom inie. And. finally—not too long ago to be forgotten St. James the Less. St. Vincent and St. Agatha wrap ped up another great year by claiming league football champion ships. --------------------O---------------------------- LC.
