Known as “Grey Eminence,” he was for vears 1he unchallenged elder statesman of Australia and for generations s name symboliz ed political integrity and flawless honesty in public affairs. One of a large family, he was the son of a railway worker in a Victorian country town He went to night school to improve his edu cation and learned his public .'^peaking. A lite-long member ol the Australian Labor Party, he was in the federal Parliament almost continuously since 1910 In his younger days he was editor of the Ballarat “Evening Echo,” a Labor paper.
