elder statesman of Australia and

One of a large family, he was
the son of a railway worker in a
Victorian country town He went
to night school to improve his edu
cation and learned his public
.'^peaking. A lite-long member ol
the Australian Labor Party, he was
in the federal Parliament almost
continuously since 1910 In his
younger days he was editor of the
Ballarat “Evening Echo,” a Labor
paper.
Labor Prime Minister from 1929
to 1932, he had the grave obliga
tion ol leading Australia through
the worst depression years in its
history Mr. Scull n made constitu
tional history in 1930 when, in de
fiance ot the Biitish Government
and against the wishes oi the rul
ing monarch. King George V. he
insisted ihat for the first time an
Australian shook, become Govei
nor-Genei al her* rhe appointee
was Str Isaac Isaacs, an eminent
Australian .lew.
Mr. Scuilins successor as Prime
Minister was also a Catholic, Jo
seph Aloysms Lyons who died in
office a few years later.
