Foster Parents Are Sought For Negro Children NEW YORK—(NC)—A plea for more foster homes for homeless Negro children was made at a fcrum of the Catholic Interracial Council by Father Edmund F. Fo garty of the New York Catholic Charities. Father Fogarty, director of His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spell man’s Campaign for Foster Homes foi Negro children, declared that organizations seeking to provide homes for Negro children often f.nd their efforts frustrated by the same community problems which beset the average Negro adult. “Negro people want to take homeless children into their homes but most of them are caught up in ral problems themselves.” he said. Foremost among these problems. Father Fogarty stated, are income aud housing. PTA NOTES PORTSMOUTH St. Mary’s PTA will sponsor a ham dinner Sunday. Feb. 22. in the school cafeteria to raise money for the annual school picnic. Plans for the dinner were com pleted at the Feb. 8 meeting, at which the Rev. Julius Klinec re viewed grade school activities. Msgr. Joseph E. McGlynn, of St. Monica’s Church, spoke on “The Religious Historical Background of Ohio.” President Paul Haaf announced that the next meeting on March 8 will he Past Presidents’ Night. A' $ $24.95 White-Haired Man Helps Crippled Girl Meet Prelate MONTREAL. Que. (NC) As dignataries filed by to greet Car dinal Paul Emile Cardinal Leger. following a Pontifical High Mass here, a young crippled girl sat in her wheelchair in one of the jam med side aisles. The girl managed to catch the eye of an elderly white-haired gen tleman who was near the Cardinal. She beckoned to him and. when he came to her. confided, her earnest wish to meet the Cardinal. The gentleman responded eager ly and guided the wheelchair to the sanctuary steps. Cardinal Leger, in the midst of greeting guests, noticed the wheel chair ap proaching, interrupted the line of those being presented to him, and stepped down into the aisle. He went forward to meet the girl, greeted her and extended his ring for her to kiss. Deeply mov ed. she thanked the prelate. There was a smile of satisfaction on the face of the old gentleman too. For he was Ernest Leger. the 76-year-old father of the Cardinal. Carmel Senior Picked As “Miss Student Nurse” Winner over six other candi dates. Miss Martha Welter, a senior in the Mt. Carmel School of Nurs ing, was named “Miss Student Nurse of Columbus" recently. The honor came at the Nurses' Association ‘‘Crystal Ball’’ at Val ley Dale in Columbus. ,The win ner’s trophy and bouquet were pre sented by Miss Carole Hoover, president of the Student Nurse As sociation of Columbus. Miss Welter is president of the Student Council at Mt. Carmel, re cording secretary of the SNAO, and chairman of the state association's committee on constitution and by laws. She ranks first in a class of 45. with a course average of 97. w A graduate ot Calvert High School in Tiffin. Onio, in 1948. Miss Welter attended St. Francis Col lege in Ft. Wayne. Ind for one Miss Martha Welter year, then worked as a nurse’s aide in a small Tiffin hospital the next, coming to Mt. Carmel in Septem ber, 1950. Martha is not the only member of her family to make news re cently. Her 18 year-old twin sis ter entered the Ursuline convent in Toledo on Feb. 12. alter working for a year in Cleveland to pay for their expenses and lor a television set for their parents. There are 11 other children in the family, including Donny, 15, who is in a Columbus school lor the deaf. The father. Mt. Carmel Has Highest Number of Grads In State Results of the State Nurses Board examinations show that the Ml Carmel School of Nursing had the state's largest group of suc cessful candidates. Fifty-six girls from the Mt. Car mel School are no v eligible to practice as registered nurses. A total of 161 nurses, graduates from the live local schools, passed the examinations. The total num be passed in the state was 1177. The other local nursing schools are located at St. Franeis Hospital. Giant Hospital. The aides were presented caps by Mother Perpetua, head of the Hospital, at ceremonies recently in the nurses’ home. Although the aides have always worn regulation uniforms, it is the first time they have worn caps. The aides are recognized as non professional workers on the nurs ing staff of the hospital, trained on the job and under the super vision of graduate nurses who are responsible for the care of the pa tients. It is the plan of the hospital to continue the capping ceremonies when aides have qualified for their work after six months on the job Receiving the caps were: Ger trude Norris.
