Sodality Must Be Restricted To Those Capable of Militant (Catholic Life, I VATICAN CITY—(NC) Only those willing and able to lead a fervent, militant and apostolic Ca tholic life should be accepted into the Sodality of Out Lady. His Holi ness Pope Piux XII has declared. The Pontiff’s forthright declara tion was revealed here with the publication of an Apostolic Letter tn Father Ixiuis Paulussen. S. J., director of the general secretariat of the Sodalities of Our Lady in Rome. The letter was published in Osservatore Romano, Vatican City daily, after it had been announced that the letter had approved the proposal for a world federation of the sodalities to take place at a world sodalities congress in Sep tember, 1954. A more rigorous selection of can didates for the sodalities, the Pope s letter declares, “is the fount of all renewal and because of this must be actuated with energy, pri marily where weakness in the true Spirit is verified.” “Only those who have the will and capacity to lead a fervent Ca tholic life, which is more militant and more apostolic, must be ad mitted to perpetual consecration, he added. “At the sodalities have been in stituted 'for all social levels of the faithful' and exist among all cate gories from the highest to the low est, this selection must be applied to all without exception. “Such selection, meant to revive the apostolic spirit in the light of the Gospel, does not necessarily im ply a diminution in the number of members in the sodalities. We praise this attitude from the bottom of Oui heart, knowing how indispen sable such a disposition of spirit in these days is the lay apostolate to have a major hold on con science. “Nor can we silently pass over those who adhere to the real re treats and who from that limpid source draw inspiration, light and energy for the direction of the so dalities according to modern re quirements. The "Perpetual consecration” referred to. by the Holy Father is the official act of becoming a sodal ist. Prior to this a prospective so dalist must undergo a probationary period lasting at least two months and often a year. Becoming a sodalist is a promise of a way of life, which does not however bind under sin. Its aim is primarily self-sanctification and then the sanctification of one’s neighbor and one’s environment. The sodality s, rules of life in clude the following: at least 15 minutes of mental prayer each day. daily Mass il possible, a daily examination of conscience, the daily Rosary, frequent reception of the Sacraments, an annual re treat and having a fixed spiritual director. The sodality was founded some four centuries ago by a .Jesuit scholastic in the Roman College in Rome. This sodality is known as the “prima primaria” and all indulgences were given to this so dality. All other sodalities are now attached to this one. The number of sodalities in the U.S. is esti mated to range into the thousands.
