10 Budenz Believes Daily Worker Threatens Shipping Halt All along the West Coast, from Seattle to San Pedro, the long shoremen are preparing to strike against the United States govern ment if Harry Bridges, o n victed perjur er, is indicted again. The Dai ly Worker of July 22 tri umphantly an nounces this threat of open sedition. Its crusade a a inst “Mc Carthyism" and by the federal gc Reds have corm the concessions vernment to the to this point, as they were bound to do The United States government is frankly told that if it dares to exercise its legal processes against the man who was con victed of lying when he said he was not a Communist, it will be Confronted with a stoppage of all shipping on the Pacific. It is to be hoped that those prominent men and women, who lent their voices and prestige to the out burst against “McCarthyism’’ and those leaders in government who advised a “soft" policy to ward the Reds, will now come to some sober second thoughts on this product of their handiwork. But they are members of the International Longshoremen's and Warehouse men's Union, expelled from the CIO for Red control, and in which the Bridges leadership has been able to build itself up through the legal procrastina tions in his case. These rank and file workers hear all around them, and specifically read in a San Francisco newspaper which is notoriously given to plugging the Communist line, condemna tion of “McCarthyism’’ from cit izens who are supposedly emi nent and responsible. The Red leadership of their union (as per the Daily Worker formula) in terprets “McCarthyism” as any move against the conspiracy, whether by FBI or the Federal courts. They assert falsely that it is directed against the life of the unions, and by these argu ments the longshoremen can be persuaded to engage in a po litical strike, that “exercise in revolution" which the Commun ists count so much upon. Reds' Threat This threat is a demand that the United States government surrender its sovereignty, at least in thic case. And if the Department of Justice does not proceed with the further prose cution of Bridges, whose con viction was thrown out on a technicality by a four to three vote of the Supreme Court, it will have surrendered sovereign ty to that extent. Mr. Lawrence's insistence that the government adopt an attitude “that is 101) per cent against Communist in filtration" and that “will re establish the honor and prestige of the United States in the Far East” is worthy of serious con sideration. Anti-Catholicism In such an atmosphere, it was quite in keeping with Communist tactics that some of the hysteria created by the Reds should be channelized against the Catho lics. Three weeks ago. I empha sized that the New Times of June 17 had ordered this to be done. Scarcely were the words written than the Daily Worker responded to these instructions from Moscow. Indignation was stimulated in its pages against His Eminence, Cardinal Spell man, for having condemned the obscene motion picture. "The Moon Is Blue.” By July 17, the Red organ had worked its read ers and friends up to the point that it prominently assailed the Cardinal for “McCarthyism” and "film burning.” There is a cynical, gangster like character to this attack that defies description. The Cornmun- ists are always decrying the cur rent "decadence of bourgeois culture.” That is the theme song of the notorious report of the Cultural Commission of the Communist Party, "Let Us Grasp the Weapon of Culture.” It is referred to frequently in Neu: Times and specifically in the is sue of July 8. Rut when a gen uine example of decadence is condemned by any member of the Catholic hierarchy, not only do the Reds defend that decad ence but assault those who con demn it. What should give us concern is that the Daily Worker can discover what it calls a Catholic critic, Richard Hayes, who has supposedly "c i i ized” and Matters Stand Joe Breig Says: Want Your Home Happy? ______________________________________________ i A reader named F. F. ('alia ghan. Santa Ana California, has suggested something. as long as I'm writing about discussion clubs that meet in the homes of mem hers, 1 ought to remind people about the En thronement of the Sacred Heart in the Home. Mr. Callaghan, vou were never more right in The Enthronement is some thing that grows naturally out of study clubs. The happiest meet ings of our clubs have been those during which the Enthronement cememony was performed. When any of our members en throne the Sacred Heart, we us ually skip the regular program. We have the Enthronement, fol lowed by a cheerful social eve ning. Let me mention here that 1 have not led a sheltered life. I’ve worked in a pool room and in a steel mill. I ran a daily newspaper. I was a Hearst newspaperman. I’ve covered murders, catastro phes, politics almost every kind of story. I’ve learned to lace tads. And one of the tacts I’ve learned is that Christ meant exactly what He .said when He told St. Margaret Mary that He would bless every house in which a picture of His Sacred Heart was exposed and hon ored. There are no its, ands or buts about it. Christ does hless those houses. He does, as He promised, establish peace in those families. He does give them the graces thev need. He does console them in all their difficulties. He has done those things and more in our house. He has done them in the homes U our other BLUE \ALLEY BUTTER IS GOOD BUTTER That’s Why Millions Uta It k A. A. A. JU. THE CATHOLIC TIMES, FRIDAY, AUGUST 14. 1953 Reds 1 lope To Stir Up Protestant Animosity Towards Catholics "challenged” the Cardinal’s act in a Catholic magazine. The Reds are delighted with this discovery, for it places -in then hands the means by which to forward that cleavage between the laity and the hierarchy which is part of their set pro gram We should never forget that in April, 1946. V.J, Jerome of the Red Cultural Commission gave the directive in Political Affairs to stir up Protestant ani mosity against Catholics and to create a separation of the Cath olic laity from the hierarchy. If there is ever a time in which that Red tactic should be recall ed and beaten down, that tune is now. dub members. Time aftei time. I’ve seen them done. Everyone wants peace. And the whole world would be instantly al peace if every family enthroned and honored the Sacred Heart. Whether the world is at peace oi not, the home where the Sacred Heart is enthroned and honored will be. Mind you. honor means honor. Folks wouldn't be honoring the Sacred Heart rightly if they en throned His picture and lived in serious sin. But I'll say this en throning Him will help anybody stop sinning. "I will give them all the graces they need Sinners shall find in My heart a fountain and boundless ocean of mercy.’’ Fact is. enthroning the Sacred Heart in your house is more im portant than putting on a roof. “I will be their refuge during life and especially at the hour of death ... I will shed abundant blessings on their undertak ings .” Any one of the promises ot the Sacred Heart would be reason enough for a barefoot pilgrimage Io the ends of the earth, if that were necessary. It isn’t. All you need to do is to put the picture in a place ol honor and then honor the Sacred Heart Tepid souls shall become fer vent Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection 1 will give to priests the power ot touching the hardest hearts Those who propagate this devo lion shall have their names writ ten in My Heart never to be blot ted out." And then there is the great final promise that those who receive Communion on nine con secutive first Fridays “shall not die in Mv displeasure.” "Look at those promises,” writes Mr Callaghan They're dynamite' the kind that builds, not de stroys.” Mr. Callaghan, you said it. "Christ docs smile,” Mr Cal lagban adds, on families who have the courage to place His image in the most prominent place in the house and keep it there.” "Most prominent place” We don't honor Christ our King verv much if we put His picture where hardly anybody hut the larftily ever sees it.
