Matters Stand----------------- Joe Breig Says: The Public School Puzzle my text from two I»f me take sources. Source No. 1: other day A speaker got up and said that as things stand now, e gov e n e n established re ligion tn public schools is Secu larism. trinate Catholic or Jewish childrer in Protestantism or Protestant children in Catholicism or Juda ism. and so on. But here’s the rub the board can. and apparently it will, allow public schools to indoctrinate Cath olic. Jewish and Protestant chil dren in Secularism. There's that word again. What’s Secularism? Well, Secularism is leaving God out of the picture. If you ban religious reading for pupils, hut admit non-religious reading, you're leaving God out of their picture out of their educa tion out of their most formative years. To take an extreme example, the pupils could, under this definition, read the Daily Worker, but not the Declaration of Independence, which speaks of God, ot the God given rights of men, and so on. Yes, 1 know, that's an extremely extreme example, but it points up the problem. To speak more mod eratcly, the pupils could read something like the New Republic, but the.v couldn't read the Jewish Advocate, or the Christian Cen tury, or Commonweal. Thus their minds could be form ed by irrehgion but not by religion. They could he turned away from (tod. hut not toward God. That’s what the speaker meant when he said that Secularism is becoming the government established school religion That’s the danger. And its a danger to which most American parents don’t want to subject then children Polls have shown that more than 99 per cent of Ameri can adults believe in God. Obvi ously, they don't want their chil dren to grow up thinking and act ing as if there were no God. nn- an We’ve got to give this -thing a good long think We don’t want public schools indoctrinating chil dren with this religion or ligion. But we don’t want future generations over creeping atheism called ism. either. There must I better solution to our The board’s problem i this ill than that. There could hardly can’t allow public schools to indoc |a worse one. FRESH FROM THE OVEN TO YOU NEW SYSTEM BAKERY Buckeye Lake At Perk Entrance E. C. (Ed.) The warning was addressed to Father Boleslaw Martynellis, 60 year-old friend of Father Borynski. It consisted of a message in Polish which read. "Milcz klech” (Be qui et, priest), and was spelled out in matchsticks on top of a bureau in Father Martynellis* room. The message was discovered af ter Father Martynellis. Father Bo rynski’s predecessor as chaplain to the 2.000 Polish exiles in Brad ford, had collapsed at his home and been taken to a hospital. Police described as “frivolous reports that two men had entered the house and attacked the priest, and said that slight head injuries were probably due to his having hurt himself when he fainted. Father Martynellis was one of the last persons to see the Polish chaplain a few hours before he hurried out of his lodgings in Bradford after supper following two mysterious phone calls and vanished without trace. “He spoke of receiving a phone call from someone purporting to speak on my behalf,” Father Martynellis then said. “I told him that I had not authorized anyone to phone for me, and then he left.” Bradford police stated officially that despite intense inquiries in the city and elsewhere nothing had been found regarding the missing 42-year-old Salesian on which a theory could be firmly based. “The reason for the intensive inquiry is the possibility that Father Bo rynski is not a free agent.” they added. “If he is a free agent, his whereabouts are not of particular interest to the police (as a normal ly missing person) until two months have elapsed. Because of the publicity given to the matter, the police would welcome informa tion which any persons can give, compatible with their religious ob ligations.” Father Henry Czorni, chief Po lish priest in th* Leeds diocese, declared that he feared Father Borynski would not be seen alive agein.
