Secretary of Labor Says No Fear of Communism If Pope’s Ideas Used ST. PAUL, Minn.—(NC)—Communism holds no threat if the principles of social justice outlined by Pope Leo XIII are adopted, Secretary of Labor Martin P. Durkin told the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council here. the Condition of Labor,” “I have no real fear of communism,” Mr. Durkin said. “No free nation need tremble before the threats of communism if its people are willing to adopt the Christian principles of social justice defined in Rerum Novarum. The doctrines laid down in this encyclical are a positive attack up on all the schemes which rob men of their dignity, degrade their moral standards and deprive them of belief in God.” Because of Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo's encyclical “On Pointing out that the Papal doc ument appeared in the “horse-and buggy days” and is being applied to atomic-age problems, Mr. Dur kin said: •‘Rerum Novarum holds the an awers to our social problems today just as vividly as though it were ELECTRIC For Reconversion Large Stock Motors and Control* EQUIPMENT Infra-Red System* Electric Power Equipment Co 5? Supreme Council as it gathered for its 71st annual meeting. He suggested that “more time should be spent perfecting our way of life” rather than defending it against charges of communists. “Certainly, none of us needs to be told by communists where there are shortcomings in our way of life and none of us needs turn to the doctrine of hate, distrust and dissension of communism for betterment,” he stated. “We have here in the words of Pope Leo XIII a pattern of social behavior which answers our every need. If we decide we are ready and able to put into practice the ideals of Christianity, then we need not concern ourselves with the dangers of communism. Enrollments Cause Urgent Need for Teachers Due to rapidly increasing enrollments Catholic elementary schools throughout the diocese are in great need of additional teachers. For example, in 1940 there were only 74Q pupils enrolled in the first grades of elementary schools in Columbus. This year. 2.000 pupils are expected in the first grades of Columbus elemen tary schools, an increase of almost 200 per cent. Additional lay teachers are needed to aid the teaching Sisters. Here is an opportunity for many women who have either retired or resigned from teaching careers in the public schools to serve God and Church by offering their services to our Catholic schools, if only for one year. In addition to the financial remuneration there is the eternal reward which comes to those who dedicate their talents to the service of God. /O Patronize these reputable merchants who make pos sible a Mt. Court To Decide If Private School Is Fax Exempt SAN FRANCISCO (NC) California tax collectors apparent ly will continue in a state of per plexity until the State Supreme Court rules on the Alameda County Court’s decision holding Proposi tion Three, which exempted non profit schools from property taxes, is unconstitutional. Leon Holm, San Francisco City Attorney, said pending the Sup reme Court’s ultimate decision in the case, no action will be taken to collect taxes from parochial and private schools which already have been stricken from the tax rolls. He added that if Proposition Three is found invalid, the taxes will be collected. State officials have expressed the opinion that the ruling may in fluence some county tax gatherers to return schools conducted by re ligious and charitable institutions to the tax rolls. It was pointed out that in Los Angeles County tax officials have continued the tax pending the outcome of the cur rent litigation. But in Sacramento, according to reports, Dixwell L. Pierce secre tary of the State Board of Equali zation, described the Alameda Court decision as “persuasive but not the last word.” Mr. Pierce said the Board had advised the counties to exempt non-profit schools from property tax and add ed this action was taken on a de cision of State Attorney General Edmond G. Brown, who upheld the validity of Proposition Three. Proposition Three was approved by California voters last November by a count of 2.441.055 to 2.343, 528. It provided that non-profit private and elementary and high schools should be exempt from property tax, thereby bringing California in line with the other 47 States of the nation. The validity of Proposition Three was attacked in a taxpayers suit filed by Alfred J. Lundberg, chair man of the California Taxpayers Alliance, in the Alameda County Superior Court. The case was heard by Presiding Judge A. J. Woolsey and Judge Cecil Mosbach er, who held that Proposition Three was unconstitutional, and Judge James R, Agee, who dissented. The judges filed no formal opinion in the case at the time. A formal ruling along with briefs and objections in the case now are being awaited so that the appeal to the State's highest court can be perfected. -------------------o------------------- Honor New Assistant DELAWARE Father Leo Sul livan, new assistant pastor of St. Mary’s parish, was guest of honor at a dinner given by the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1056 re cently.
