Group Resents Israel's Choice Of New Capital NEW YORK (NC) The Government of Israel com mitted an act of “agression” in transferring all its ministries from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This assertion was made by Msgr. Thomas J. McMahon, national secretary of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. I In a pamphlet on the current status of the Holy Land. Monsignor McMahon recalled that Secretary of State John Foster Dulles had labelled the moving 01 the Israeli Foreign Ministry to the Holy City an ’inopportune” act which had embarrassed the I nited Nations. Pointing out that His Holiness Pope Pius Xll had issued a series of three encyclicals calling for in ternationalization of the Holy Places. Monsignor McMahon urged Americans to write their represent atives asking that the United States stand by United Nations decisions calling for establishment of an in ternational zone. Entitled “Hills of the Morning: Whence and Whither Palestine?’’ the pamphlet has been published by the Welfare Association. The prelate noted that when the Israeli foreign minister recent ly told accredited diplomats that they would be expected to join him in Jerusalem, more than a score of them refused and remained in Tel Aviv, "the real capital’’ of Is rael. The Kingdom of Jordan also has “given signs of a show of strength on Jerusalem,*’ h? said, holding sessions of its cabinet and its deputies in the “Old City.” Despite general acceptance of the partition of Jerusalem by the Arabs and Israelis the monsig nor stressed the fact that “there Is a third right in Palestine He declared that Christian interests Ir the Holy Land roach back to the beginnings of Christianity, and have been “incontrovertibly Japanese Prince Says isit to Pope ‘Unforgettable* WASHINGON DC. (NO- One of the most unforgettable experi ences of Japanese Crown Prince Akihito and his entourage during their tour of Europe wa the visit thev paid to His Holmes'- Pope Pius XII. This was the report made here by John Akira Matsui. a distin guished Japanese Catholic layman, who accompanied the Crown Prince as his personal interpreter, in an exclusive interview-. The interview took place as the 19-jear-old Prince was preparing to leave Washington for a tour of the United States prior to return ing to Japan on October 12. In the course of his remarks, Mr. Matsui painted a promising pic ture of the future of the Church in Japan, and paid tribute to the fine spiritual life of the Catholic communities he had visited in Europe. "Speaking for myself as a Catholic,” Mr. Matsui said, "I think all the members of our partv. even those who were not Christians, were very* much im pressed by our visit to the Vati can and by the extremely cor dial welcome extended to us there "However, what most impressed us.” he added, "was the very warm and gracious welcome extended by the Holy Father himself.” Mr Matsui said that both dur ing his tour of Europe and his stay in the United States, hr had been struck by the freindly and deep interest in Japan shown by the atholics he had met. Thus “the Church and churchmen have by no means abdicated their just right to demand their stake in the Holy Land of Jesus Christ." Monsignor McMahon denied charges that the Church’s stand is based on political considerations. “The Catholic attitude” towards Is rael. he said, "has to be bipartite.” The Church has "the perfect right to expect that our institutes and our people within the confines ot Israel should be guaranteed that freedom of religious organization which is granted in all true democ racies,” he explained. In this cate gory hr placed “the liberty to con duct our schools and to carry on our religious life,” and said it would be "tragic” if those Arab cit izens remaining in Israel were rele gated to "second class” citizenship. In this connection, the prelate noted the charitable efforts of the Church in behalf of the 800.000 homeless Arab refugees from Is real, and asserted that 25,000 of the Arabs left in Israel are atho lies The second consideration in the Church’s “bipartite” view of the Holy Land is the international, or rather supranational’’ issue of Jer usalem and the Holy Places, ac cording to Monsignor McMahon. -----------------0----------------- Reds Add Six More to List Of Expellees HONG KONG (NC) One priest one Brother and four nuns have been added to the mounting number ot Catholic missionaries forced from Red China.
