From the Penn League, Eddy went to the Evangeline League, where he finished the season for Jeanerette. He started out there in 1938 and then moved to Texas, where he bounced back and forth between the Texas and East Texas Leagues until 1942, with a short stint in the Western Association in 1941. He finished the 1942 season in the Southern League, playing for Little Rock, and stayed with them through 1943. Little Rock was his springboard into the majors. The Chicago White Sox started hnn off with them for the 1944 season. In his last year in the minors, Eddy piled up 103 runs on 258 hits in 32 games. On the mound, he was credited with winning 19 and losing 10 for that year, his best pitching year in the minors. In his first season with the Sox, red-headed Ed ended up with just one win over the losses, 11-10, and the following year was the first and last in the majors that he lost more than he won, 10 13. Since 1946. when lie won and lost 13, he has been on the top side of the win column. In 1951 he broke into the 20 win club by taking 21 and drop ping 9 for his best season so far. In his six years in the Bronx, Lopat’s 2 54 earned run average for 1952 has been bettered by only one Yankee, Allie Reynolds, with 2.07 in the same season. Eddy, as do all Catholic ball players, carries his Miraculous Medal with him all the time. In addition to it. he carries the medal oi his favorite saint, St. Christo pher. wife, the former Howell, have two Edmund who is Melissa, who has Eddy and his Mary Elizabeth children John pushing 3, and cleared the one year mark. Saturday Night Both Squads Lose Openers All Diocesan Teams in Action Columbus Holy Rosary moves into Zanesville Saturday night to battle Rosecrans Bishops as the second week of football gets underway. Both squads dropped their initial starts last week. Rosary to Circleville 31-0. and Rosecrans to West Lafayette 20-13. The Bishops gained over 400 yards in rushing and passing against the Generals bnt couldn’t seem to gain when it counted most. Rosary fell behind by 12 points at the end of the quarter and never caught up at Circlevillle. Bill Barthelmas ripped off a 55 yard run against the Crusaders. The rest of the diocesan squads pick up the schedule Friday or Saturday night. Columbus St. Mary, defeated 25-0 by Dover St. Joseph, travels to Mt. Vernon. The Ramblers showed their lack of experience against the Dover gridders, but as coach Ken Neville expressed it, “the only way to get experience is to play, so that’s what vv^’ll do.” St. Charles, which opened last week with k 6-0 win over Bexley, will tangle with Columbus Central Friday night at Central’s field. The Pirates dropped a 25-2 tilt last week at Steubenville. whI Saturday night in Ma Irish were impressive in preview win over Fos weeks ago. Newark St. Francis will meet South Zanesville at the YMCA park in Newark Saturday night. The Green Wave opened last week against Kirkersville, winning 38-0. Lexington St. Aloysius’ six man football team opened the school’s first football season with a rousing 56-19 win over Etna last week. St. Al’s had little trouble after the first quarter in downing the Lick ing county team.
