Every college could—and should—have a department of religion staffed by teachers of the major faiths, a atholic educator told the nation s top college heads meeting here. Studying the intellectual con tent of diverse religions under ex perts in those religions is the only solution to the problem of religion in colleges, Father Paul Reinert, S,.L, president of St. Louis Univer sity. declared. He said that attempts to teach a religious “common denominator” acceptable to all are “futile and doomed to failure.” He said that students should be required "within the limits of the right* of conscience" to take cours es either in basic moral living or in religion as taught by experts of the various denominations. Father Reinert spoke at a session of the annual meeting ot the Amer ican Council on Education, nation wide organization of college and university heads. President Eisen hower opened the council's two day sessions with a plea for stu dent exchange programs to pro mote international understanding. In his talk, Father Reinert de clared that religion must be rec ognized by colleges and universi ties as having valuable intellectual content rather than being only “a matter of faith, feeling and emo tion.” The average American college graduate "is an infant in the field of intellectual religion," he seid, and only by restoring religion to intellectual dignity in U.S. colleges will youth regain the birthright of which they are "being robbed." Criticism of public schools by “some people who just don’t be lieve that education should serve the needs of all the people” was scored by Herold C. Hunt, former Chicago Superintendent of Schools, w ho deplored “the current epidem ic of books” which claim “that the schools are in evil hands.” He said that much of the criti cism is unfair and is ottered by persons who wish to foster private and parochial schools at the ex pense ot the public school system. Mr. Hunt acknowledged “the right and privilege of every Amer ican to support private and pa rochial education, but held that every citizen must also help to maintain public schools. (Catholics have been repeatedly reminded of then duty to support and to show interest in the public school system, in statements by loading (atholic educators and members of the hierarchy.) -------------------o------------------ How can you fall to make tho kale? Library Notes 'The Borrowers' Pleases All Readers, Regardless of Age From the Djpertment of Library Science College of St. Mary of the Springs The Borrowers, by Mary Norton. Harcourt, Brace and Company, Neu York, 1953, $2.50. Awarded the Carnegie Medal as the oustanding children’s book of 1952, this enticing story of the bor rowers is just the type normal ini aginative children will delight in. Things never are quite right in the miniature world of Pod, Homily and Arriety and the incidents that take place are as odd as the names of the wee folk. Readers, whether young or old, will find this story interesting and an absorbing piece of literature. M.S. Th* Jim Thorp* Story, by Gene Schoor, Julian Messner, Inc., New York, 1951, $2.75. The story of Jim Thorpe would prove very exciting to any sports fan. I would not recommend it too highly to a very young athlete, for Jim Thorpe won his laurels with very little effort and with a gener al disregard for rules set down as a part of athletic training. This great athlete rose in my estima tion, however, in the way he ac cepted the withdrawal of the Olym pic trophies he had won. This was the result of a breach of the rules of the Amateur Athletic Union, which he made very innocently during his early days at Carlisle, long before he competed in the Olympics. S.M.R. The questicns scat tered through the book at regular intervals are an excellent check for the student to judge his own degree of comprehension. They should encourage the pupil to read more thoughtfully in order to suc cessfully meet their challenge.
