LOUIS (NC) His Holiness Pope Pius XII has ap pealed for emphasis on the personal element and “the emin ent importance of volunteer services” in welfare work and charity. The Pope's plea was made the National Conference of Catho- lie Charities, the Society of St. Vin cent de Paul, and the Apostleship of the Sea. It was contained in a letter imparting His Holiness’ Blessing on all participants in the meetings, and “to all who contrib ute in any way toward the work of Catholic Charities.” The Pontiff’s appeal was echoed by Coadjutor Bishop Thomas K. Gorman of Dallas—who asserted that for most people, charity is lim ited to “the anonymity of a tax re ceipt”—and by former Secretary of I^abor Martin P. Durkin, who ac cented the need for what he called “positive charity.” Monsignor Montini'* message noted that the very efficiency of modern charitable organiza tions “may lead to a certain lack of th* personal, human touch of immediate contact." “For this and other reasons.” he said, “the Sovereign Pontiff would raise aloft before the gaze of the faithful this high ideal: That every individual Catholic be brought to engage in some work of personal service to Christ’s poor. His Holiness wishes thus to emphasize the eminent importance of volunteer services in the field of Catholic Charities.” Monsignor Montini also recalled that in his 1952 Christmas message the Holy Father “called up a vis ion of new horizons of charity”— a concept of worldwide brother hood binding together all the peo ples of the earth. “Christian love will manifest itself by supplying the immediate necessities of food and shelter, but also by obtaining liberty of emigration from over populated countries to more for tunate shores,” he said, “and by contributing in every way to raise Annual Spaghetti Dinner The annual Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by the ladies of St. Mar garet’s parish will be held Sunday, Oct. 18, at the parish hall on Tra bue Rd., Columbus.
