Ohio spying for the Vatican and the United States as “a sheer mockery of justice.’* The speaker described the arrest of Cardinal Stephan Wyszynski, September 26, as “another act of Soviet infamy and terror.” Mr. Lipski said “the only de fense of the heroic and helpless people of Poland against the wan ton and brutal tyranny of Commun ist Russia is the strong armor of their faith.” “In Poland where the over whelming majority of the popula tion is Catholic, the Moscow pup pets had to proceed gradually in their efforts to undermine the Church.” Mr. Lipski said. "Unable to deprive the people of Poland of their deeply rooted religious feelings, closely linked with their national traditions, the Communists concentrated their main attack on the Polish episco pate and clergy," he declared. “On February 10 last, the Com munist regime in Poland issued a decree in accordance with the terms of which the appointment, transfer and dismissal of clergy was made solely dependent on Communist state administration. “The creation of new parishes and dioceses, their reorganization and liquidation also w’ere made subject to the consent of Commun ist authorities. Priests were forced, when nominated for Church func tions, to swear before Communist state authorities. This decree is a flagrant contradiction of law’, aim ed at severing the unity between the Catholic Church in Poland and the Vatican. It strives to break the links which in Poland’s thou- sand years’ history united that country with Western culture.” The way in which the trial of Bishop Kaczmarek was carried out, Mr. Lipski said, "was a sheer mock ery of justice and a classical exam ple of Soviet methods to extract confessions from innocent defend ants. It was a signal of alarm that yet greater evil is at hand." Continuing, Mr. Lipski stated that the 174th anniversary of the death of General Pulaski “gives us an opportunity to join in the con demnation of the hideous assault perpetrated in Poland against the highest dignitary of the Church.” Mr. Lipski said in conclusion, “we appeal to the conscience of the free world in the fact of this new outrage, and raise our voices in protest against a crime which should open the eyes of those in the western world who still keep illusions as to the real aims of the Kremlin.” A colorful parade of 10.000 Pol ish American men, women and chil dren. dre-sed in native costumes precedes the final phase of the days program in Independence Square. —........ Sometimes “trials” are held in the prison itself and executions carried out in the basement Some 450 inmates sening life sentences operate state printing presses for circulars, identity cards and the like. Bishop Kaczmarek’s health, al ready undermined under prolong ed torture, is reportedly ready to break down completely. He is said to recite obediently anything ask ed. His statements include con tradictions, inaccurate dates and confusion about names. Meantime, other reports indicate that more Bishops have fallen into disfavor and are expected to be banished from their Sees and re placed by “patriotic priests.” Christophers v Will Sponsor 1 Essay Contest NEW YORK—(NC)—The Chris tophers announced an essay con test for priests, seminarians and those in religious life on the sub ject “Mary, the First Christ bearer.” Prizes of $100 each will be given to the ten best entries, and the es says are limited to 3.000 words or less. Film Smearing Cardinal Made By Tito Reds GRAZ, Austria —(NC)— Tito is reported making a new effort to blacken the name of His Emin ence Aloysius Cardinal Stepinac before world opinion. It is reported here that an alleged “documentary’ film,” entitled “Car dinal Criminal,” has been flown to Washington. Plans to show the film to an invited American and foreign audience when delegates from 33 nations gather there from Oct. 9 to 14 for the conference of the Interparliamentary Union. (Efforts to obtain either a denial or confirmation of this report from the Yugoslav embassy in Wash ington met with no results. The Ambassador was reported out of town. The highest official at the embassy, a commercial counselor, stated that he knew nothing about any’ plans to show’ the “documen tary film,” and added that such matters were out of his field. He said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.) The “documentary” has report edly been fabricated to show the Cardinal-Archbishop of Zagreb as a collaborator of the Ustashi and Nazis during World War II. It is said that the film and a number of anti-Stepinac publica tions in several languages have been dispatched 1o Washington in order to combat the influence of the book “The Case of Cardinal Stepinac.” W'ritten by Dr. Richard Pattee. special foreign affairs con sultant of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, and Catholic Times writer, the scholarly an alysis of the Cardinal's case has caused concern in Yugoslav circles. Yugoslav diplomats and dele gates to the Interparliamentary’ Union have been issued instruc tions on how to try to answer the facts brought out in the Pattee book. o-... —..... ... Pope Stresses 11 u ma n Needs In Industry VATACIN CITY, (Radio, NC)— “The factory, before it is a mold er of metal, is like exery human association, a molder of men,” His Holiness Pope Pius XII told a group of American foundrymen at an audience here today. The visitors had come from Paris where they had attended the In ternational Congress of Foundry men. The Holy Father told them: “It is gratifying to observe that the delicate but critical problem of human relations in the factory, foundry and office is coming to occupy the attention it merits in your meetings with your fellow foundrymen abroad.” “Matter comes out of the factory ennobled, and men too often de based.” His Holiness said, quoting from the Encyclical Quadragesimo .Anno. He added that animating the whole industrial unit of employer and employed is the soul of the worker, with its hopes and fears. "Security and efficiency in business," he declared, "are the return paid on the sense of jus tice and the amity that reigns among those who unite their ef forts—often their heroic courage —to build it and keep it what you Americans call 'a going con cern'." “We trust” he concluded “that you will have been heartened to find your European colleagues at one with you in their determin ation to resist valiantly that de personalizing process barbarous word for a barbarous reality which threatens today much more than merely economic values.” Fifth Ave 1352 W. Kenya, British East Africa —(NC)— A sorrowing Ca tholic community offered Requiem Mass here for a 61-year-old nun w’ho was slashed to pieces by the gigantic knives of Mau Mau ter roists. Some 60 terrorists, armed with hugh native knives and poisoned arrows, struck the Catholic mission here on the night of September 28. Sister Eugena Cavallo, who had worked here for 22 years, was the only one killed in the attack. Her left hand was amputated and her head slashed off by the knife swinging terrorists. A priest, Father Edmondo Ca vicchi, was wounded in the shoul ders and hands, but was able to escape in the darkness. Another nun, Sister Evangelina was captured by the terrorists but was released when they were put to flight by a group of native Christians mobilized by other priests and Brothers at the mis sion. Imenti is the Catholic head quarters for the diocese of Meru and is staffed by the Consolata missionaries of Turin, Italy. The Mau Mau terrorists who made the attack are believed com posed of local natives who w'ere recently dismissed from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Plunder is believed to have been the motive for their attack. Local authorities have begun investigations and a number of suspected persons have been placed under arrest. (The Mau Mau are a secret society in the Kikuyu tribe and are dedicated to the ouster of all whites and of all Christian influ ences from Africa. The movement is reportedly now being aided by the Kremlin. But the causes which led to its spread are listed as in adequate land for the Kikuyus and the pernicious education provided by secularistic, independent schools established some decades ago by British authorities for the Kikuyus.) —--------------——0........... 1 Thousands Pay Tribute I o ‘Apostle of Ireland’ DUBLIN, Ireland (NO—Thou sands of pilgrims from all parts of the country gathered at the ruins of famed Clonmacnois Ab bey near Athlone, County West meath. to pay tribute to an Irish saint who died nearly 1.500 years ago.
