Phil Shoup, 215-pound senior, was at right tacgie Saturday when the Flyers played the Uni versity of Cincinnati. The handsome Flyer lineman observed hi 26th birthday on Tuesday (Oct. 20) and although he's playing a rugged sport gen erally regarded as oelonging to younger athletes, he's more than holding his own. Shoup, who prepped at Colum bus South high school, got a late start in college. There was a our of duty in the Navy in which he served with the medical corps. T|,en after leaving service he became a state trooper for Ohio. It was while serving as a troop er that the 6'3" senior became interested in L'.D. Shoup and his partner frequently stopped off at U.D. Stadium on game days and Phil decided he'd like to trade uniforms. He switched his trooper's uni form for Flyer football togs and in his first year on the varsity became first string defensive tackle and helped the Flyers into the Salad Bowl in Phoenix, Ari zona. That was in 1951. Shoup had no trouble making the switch to offense and Kis play has been one of the bright spots of a season that has bee*v rough on the Flyers in the won lost column. Most pleasing to the coaches has been the fact that Shoup has not come down with that afflic tion that hits so many fourth year ball players—"Senioritis." Shoup still digs and drives like a sophomore. He's eager and ag gressive although his teammates upon occasions playfully refer to him as the "old man." Columbus Cathtlic League Set for Sixth round action gets under way this week in the Columbus Catholic elementary football leagues with the Thursday battle between St. Agatha and.St. Ladis laus in the Middleweight loop, holding the top attraction. St. Ladislaus is currently setting the pace in the league with a per fect 6-0 record. St. Agatha has a chance to catch up when the two squads meet as they have lost only one while winning five. A win for St. Agatha would deadlock the pair for the league’s lead. In last week’s big game, St. Leo and Our Lady of Peace battled to a 6-6 tie in their fight for first place in the Lightweight division. Both had entered the tilt with 5-0 marks. Close behind is with a 4-2 record. The Terriers will be seeking their fourth win of the campaign as against three losses and a tie. Aqui nas is currently in third place in the city loop with two wins, two losses and a tie. Their other win was against Chillicothe, while the loss was at the hands of Ports mouth. to- Aquinas’ Bob Tiberi will have an extra incentive in this week’s tilt. He’s second in scoring in the league, only six points behind Lin den’s Paul Snyder. Tiberi has four touchdowns for 24 points while Snyder has three TDs and 12 extra points for a total of 30. Last week Tiberi scored one of two Terrier tallies as Aquinas lost to Colum bus Central 34-14. The loss knock ed any championship hopes of the Irish. Meanwhile Columbus St. Charles, showing improvement every week, will meet Grandview Friday night. The Carolians, after suffering an early season loss to Columbus Cen tral, have racked up five straight wins. Their latest triumph was a smashing 31-12 verdict over Co lumbus St. Mary last Friday. Prob ably the biggest surprise in this year's Carolian season was the ease with which the Cards rolled over Columbus Linden two weeks apo. Linden had lost only one tilt all year and was leading the Columbus city league when they tangled with the fired up Cards. St. Charles took a seven point lead at the qua.ter, led 13-7 at the half and then push ed over two more scores in the last half to gain the nod. Marion St. Mary, finally scored upon, racked up its sixth straight win last week against Carey. The Irish allowed Richwood one touch down two weeks ago in their 55-6 win. It was the first time this year St. Mary’s had been scored upon. Mansfield Madison will meet the Irish Saturday night in Marion for what will probably be the toughest game of the year for Ray Robbins’ crew. Should the Irish get by Mans field only Elm Valley will stand be tween them and a perfect season. North Canton will journey to Do ver this Friday to meet Dover St. Joseph.
