Of Interest To Women By Our Correspondents MILLERSBURG The Altar and Rosary Society of St. Peter’s parish is planning a Christinas party for the children of the parish The group has started a block Rosary to be held in the homes of mem bers once a month. Attendance at the first meeting was very good. At their last meeting the ladies sorted and mended clothes to be sent overseas for relief purposes. MAR1UN Reports on the an nual Diocesan Conference held re cently at Columbus, and on the ac tivities of the local council were given at a meeting of St. Mary Parish Council, NCCW, last week in Moira Hall. Plans also were made for the parish charity work, including the annual clothing drive for overseas relief. Mrs. Robert Ramroth. president, Christmas Cards Stressing Religion Gain In Popularity CINCINNATI—(NO—One of the nation’s leading card manufactur ers has reported that religious Christmas cards came close to one fifth of its total card output for this year. The Gibson Art Company of Cin cinnati, said 18 per cent of its Christmas cards this year are re ligious in theme. Last year the ratio was fourteen per cent. William C. Dresmann, company vice-president, predicted a “contin ued increase” of religious Christ mas cards in the coming years and pointed out that only five years ago the company’s religious card output was only about 10 per cent of the total. Mr. Dresmann said that the greeting card industry’s national association has taken a strong stand against “risque” or other wise indecent cards, and that viola tions by publishers call for a heavy fine by the association. At a recent joint session with the parish PTA, Miss Ad ams installed these other new ♦fficers of the NCCW: Mrs. Les ter Doutt, Jr., vice-president Mrs. Louis Lagatta. secretary, and Mrs. William Marino, treas urer. The two groups honored the Sisters with a Harvest Show-er at the meeting. Mrs. William Munjas, Mrs. M. A. Baker, Mrs. Daniel Urfer and Mrs. Michael Seibold were in charge of the lunch which was served by the 11th and 12th grade mothers. The NCCW’ presented a “Fash ion Showcase” at Memorial Hall last week before 200 persons to help suggest Christmas gifts. Miss Adams narrated the show, which was sponsored for the ben efit of the convent. Committee chairmen included Mrs. Charles Casagram, tickets Mrs. Robert Tolotti, refresh ments: Mrs. Louis Lagatta, scen ery. and Mrs. William E. Ken nedy, prizes. Mrs. John Schlemmer will be hostess to the December meeting of the Blessed Martin Study Club. "Orations in the Bible” was the topic of discussion at the last meeting. He said that the drift toward a “mass” society and the problem of how to help families are the two issues foremost in his mind. The organization embraces about 1.200 Catholic women’s groups with 250.000 members. Rep resentatives of Catholic women in the communist-ruled Eastern Zone of Germany and from several for eign countries were pre-ent Cardinal Frings, who offered Pontifical Mass in Cologne ca thedral for the women, pointed out in a sermon that the Church grants far-reaching liberty to the laity both men and women—to organize itself under various forms. He said that the Church has always upheld the equality of men and women before divine law and has thus during the cen turies paved the way toward the justified emancipation of women. The Cardinal said that the Wom en’s League is the legitimate rep resentative of Germany’s Catholic women and he thanked the organ ization for the valuable services rendered to the Church during the past half century. The league which has its headquarters in Cologne, is affiliated with various international Catholc women’s or ganizations. The league maintains its own homes and hospice^ in a number of German cities where it carries on its varied activities, such as aid for working women, trainins of social workers and operating kindergartens. NC) A group of communists tried to de stroy a historic Marian shrine in Slovakia, one of the most staunchly Catholic areas of Czechoslovakia, according to reports here. Located near Bratislava, the shrine is that of Our Lady of Maria tal, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful of its kind in Eu rope, and has been a cente of Catholic devotion since early in the 12th century. The reports stated that the com munist intruders sought to demol ish the shrine and carry off the image of the Virgin, but were re pulsed by alerted Catholics. A voluntary guard of Catholics was subsequently organized to pro tect the shrine from possible fur ther attacks, the report added This has been the third attack on Mariatal since 1949. when the shrine became the target of a bit ter communist propaganda cam paign.
