12—-THE CATHOLIC TIMES Friday. Dec 18, 1953 -----As Matters Stand------------- Joe Breig Says: No Atom Jitters Here I am happy tn note that there is at least one man alive today who has not got the atomic jitters, and has not given up the human race __ as hopeless. y Curiously f'rtouch this man k n o sx s better A a n anybody else how bad V things are. But xl hf also knows /W**/ that there are jlL a *ot gooc* people in the k world, and that v r^ God’s arm is not shortened. I am referring to Pope Pius xn. It is refreshing as mountain air and spring sunshine to read the lit tle talks, the formal addresses, and the encyclicals that flow week by week from the Vatican. Other folks may be wringing their hands and looking for hide outs in the hills more or less safe fro-i hydrogen blasts. Others may be shrugging their shoulders fa talistically and saying: “Well, if the bombs fall, they fall. There is nothing that we can do about it. Pope Pius is different He neither shrugs nor heads for the hills. He is laboring heroically and gigantic ally to build the foundation for the greatest civilization ever seen on this earth. He is telling us how to reorgan ize the world for such peace and prosperity as we dare not even imagine. And he is not a dreamer. His proposals are as practical as potatoes. While many of us are wondering whether we have a remote chance of surviving as Modern Cave Men. the Holy Father is counselling us to get busy at the job of setting up a new order of justice, law, peace and co-operation all around the globe. He calls upon us first to purge our souls of hatreds, jealousies, sus picions. despairs, jingoisms, exag gerated nationalisms, and the like. That is the first step. We must come to see the human race as one great family, and the earth as that family’s home, given to it hy God our Father. Then the Pope wants us to work for justice because justice is the root of peace. We are to labor with charity in our hearts: because the love of true justice springs from the love of God and love of fellow men. The Pope wants economic jus tice. That is, he wants all the A. The Pope knows that starving, dis possessed. underprivileged, and suppressed folks are not good ground for growing the flowers of peace. The Pepe wants sociological jus tice. He wants over-crowded peo ples to be allowed to migrate to un populated or underpopulated areas, there to begin new lives, as did our ancestors who came to America a century or two ago. He knows that the imprisoning of men and women and children in w hat might be call ed geographical ghettos is not con ducive to world peace. The Pope wants legal and juri dical justice. He wants the human race to agree on international laws to stop international banditry, to punish war crimes and wars of ag gression He knows that an earth roamed by gangster nationalism cannot be a world at peace: can not be a world of swords turned into ploughshares ft can only be a world of ever more dreadful weapons a globe that is a gigantic bomb. The Holy Father wants the na tions to co-operate in setting up a good world order, much as the States of the United States created an American order to “insure do mestic tranquility and promote the general welfare.” If it could be done in America, as it was, it can be done across lhe world. There can be a Constitution of the Broth erhood of Man under the Father hood of God. There must he. If there isn’t, then eventually we can all look around for a cave. I know that manv men who pride themselves upon their practicality think that little or nothing can be done in the present atmosphere of the world. One thing is certain —-nothing will he done unless we get at it We might he surprised to see how much could be done if we borrowed Pius XII’s courage and hopefulness, and proceeded step by step to move forward toward the golden age that can be ours, if only we will proceed serenely, with full conlidenxe in the mer ciful providence of God. 0- ..... .... ..... St. Vincent’s, at Latrobe, Pa., is the only other American Archab bey. St. Meinrad, part of the Swiss American Congregation of Benedic tines, is planning for a centennial celebration next October, In the century since its founding, the Benedictine Fathers have started four new foundations directly from St. Meinrad. First of these, New Subiaco Abbey in Arkansas— founded in 1878—now has a daugh ter-house of its own in Texas. The second foundation from St. Meinrad was started in 1890 in Louisiana, and is now St. Joseph’s Abbey. The third and fourth foun dations—started by the present su perior of St. Meinrad, Archabbot Ignatius Esser, O.S.B.—are Mar mion Abbey at Aurora. Ill., found ed in 1933, and Blue Cloud Abbey in South Dakota. The South Dakota foundation, started in 1950 for missionary work among the Indians, is named in honor of (he Indian chief Blue Cloud, who persevered in the Faith for 50 years without priest or church. In addition, the other six mon asteries of the Swiss-American Con gregation were founded indirectly through the encouragement of St. Meinrad’s first Abbot. ■------------------o------------------ Cardinal Deplores Immoral Passages In Catholic Novels I/ONDON (NC) His Emi nence Bernard Cardinal Griffin. Archbishop of Westminster, took issue with Catholic writers whose novels, he said, despite their Cath olic theme, may portray immoral conduct in such a way as to pro vide temptation for many readers. The Cardinal, in an Advent pas toral letters, in which he paid high tribute to the Catholic press, stress ed that there could be no justifica tion for publishing material which, if not directly immoral, is calcu lated to prove an occasion of sin to the vast majority of readers. “It is sadly true.” he declared, “that a number of Catholic writ ers have fallen into this error, in deed. novels which purport to be the vehicle for Catholic doctrine frequently contain passages which by their unrestrained portrayal of immoral conduct prove a source of temptation to many of their read ers. Though it may well he that such literature can be read in safe ty by the select few, so great is the danger to the virtue of the ma jority that its general publication is most undesirable.” The presentation of the Catholic way of life within the framework of fiction may be an admirable ob ject, but it can ’never justify as a means to that end the inclusion of indecent and harmful material,” Cardinal Griffin said, adding: "We urge those Catholic writ ers concerned, whose literary merits are undoubted, to think as to whether their talents can not be used to bettor service in keeping with the high traditions of Catholic literature and less likely to prove harmful to the morals of their readers.” In his pastoral letter, Cardinal Griffin referred also to secular newspapers which “appear to have lost all sense of public morality.” “We trust,” he said, “that every effort will be made from within the press to banish obnoxious mat ters from lhe pages of the news paper. The proprietors themselves must appreciate that they are ulti mately responsible for the material before the reading public.” --------------------o ............ Catholics here point out that this allotment of public funds is for a purpose to which Catholics are op posed in conscience. They also note that the taxpayers were not con sulted on this move. Meanwhile it was learned that the International Planned Parent hood Federation will soon open its Western Pacific headquarters here. This city will thus become the place from which birth-control propaganda will be channeled to all Malaya. Hong Kong, Indonesia. Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Oceania. Cite "Overpopulation” The Family Planning Associa tion cites an alleged overpopula tion in these areas. Statistics show, according to Catholic sources here, that there is in fact no overpopulation, but only a faulty distribution of the people and underproduction, both of which could be remedied by gov ernment measures. Catholics here call for coordi nated government efforts to decen tralize the population which has crowded into the large cities in in creasing numbers.
