It is insistent in emphasizing within our minds and hearts that each of us, no matter what our ma erial circumstances, has something to give which, if given in the right spirit, will be much appreciated by the recipient. In planning our Christmas giv ing we should forget completely what others may do and think only of what we can do. Those of us who must limit our giving should never be ashamed that this is so. But we should be ashamed if it makes us foolishly CHRISTMAS GREETINGS HOBART SALES AGENCY 42 W. Schlichter By Norman Only the giving that shows the Christmas spirit abounding in the heart of the giver is true Christ mas giving. conscious of the better situation of others. As I look back over many, many Christmas seasons the gifts that have given ine the most joy were the simplest ones given with gen uine good will and good wishes. Among these was a box of match es yes, just a five-cent present in terms of money—carefully and ar tistically covered to look like a book. Only a friend who was fill ed .with the true spirit of Christ mas could have put as much of herself into this treasured gift. Much lime had gone into the dec oration which also revealed the deep love of art in th giver. I recently heard a little story (Continued on Page 8) Christmas Customs Elsewhere Christmas customs in Isatin America have a common Iberian background, with Indian and Af rican variations in some sections. Of recent years North American customs, predominantly of Eng lish and German origin, have infil trated cosmopolitan centers. In ru ral communities the more distinc tive and native traditions are pre served intact. Near Cuzco, Peru, presents are hung over the church door a sort of pinata party and after Mass there is a free-for-all grabbing for gifts. The pinata in Mexico is an earthen pot, gaily decorated, filled with candy and suspended from the ceiling. A child is blindfolded, spun around, then given a stick with which he tries to break the pinata. In Venezuelan villages the general store raffles baskets load er? with Christmas food and cheer. In Andean villages dancers cele brate in the streets, wearing masks, and perform at each house for the established reward of a glass of chicha. Colombians masquerade on Christmas Eve. their arms load ed with gifts. The one who identi fies his friend, despite the dis guise, is entitled to a gift. 8 ztz s&i Christmas Joy Compliments of ST. Their choice was the balsam fir, still the most popular of Christmas trees. SEASON’S GREETINGS Bolenbaugh Hardware Co. Filled with the glory of Her sacred, wondrous mother love She held Him in her arms. Felt the pulse of His heart against hers, Smiled, and crooned the tender mother sounds That fall so sweet on baby ear He was her Son and she was Mary, Mother of Jesus, pure I-amb of the Ixrd. They came to adore Him, and her smile Was sweetly wise. She knew what they Could only dimly sense-— That here lay all of Ixve Incarnate, That now The Word was come to life, The pledge of God had been re deemed. She was Mary, blessed among women, Mother of Christ, the Saviour, Im manuel. And the angels sang, and the star Emblazoned the night, and the Magi Came and hailed Him King of Kings. But now sorrow tinged the mother pride. Dark anguish gripj»ed the mother heart— Jesus ucas born, fruit of her womb She was Mary, and He was her Son.
