Moslem Control Might Hurt Church In Sudan KHARTOUM, Sudan (NC) The Church in the Anglo Egyptian Sudan is concerned as she sees this country approach ing a fork in the road. Things have been rolling along smoothly for the Church 'during British control of the area. She fears a bumpv ride ahead when the Sudan will likely turn onto the road of inde pendence or perhaps of incorporation into Egypt. The Church has made consider able progress in this vast sprawling area of almost a million square miles a territory covering 20 Guide GOELLER'S PAINT STORE 319 i. The Church is particularly concerned about how rough and treacherous the road might be for her if the territory chooses independence. The British have promised the peo ple a choice of either independence or incorporation into Egypt within three years. Catholic missionaries express satisfaction with the relations ex isting between the Church and the present government a limited Sudanese administration with a British governor general as chief of state. They point out that the government is cooperating with large-scale Catholic building and development programs. Church enjoys government nition for her leadership in tion and family welfare. The recog educa- inde- But the prospect of an pendent Sudan brings linos of worry to the missionaries' faces. They feel that an independent state would be Moslem-controlled and would look with disfavor on Christian missionary efforts. The Sudan has a population nf some eight million people. About six and a quarter million of these are Moslems. The rest are mainly pagan, with a small minority of Christians. Catholics number less than 100.000. The Moslems are of Arab blood and live mainly in the more pros perous north, which is rich in na tural resources. The Christians are converts from the Negro popula tion in the south. And the Ne groes are a three-to-one minority in the Sudan. Those of mixed Arab and Negro blood are called Nubi ans. Catholic Investment Great The .Catholic Church has invest ed a great amount of funds and work in the Sudan As an example, one parish in the Sudanese capital here has a church, rectory, con vent. primary school, college, open air theater, several playgrounds, basketball court, soccer field, swimming pool, a clubhouse for the Catholic college graduates and an other for Catholic families. The missionaries feel that such expansion would not be pos sible under a Moslem-controlled government. For this reason most of the Catholic missions have undertaken a vast building program to bo completed within the next few years. “Perhaps a Moslem government would not place too many restric tions on us,” one veteran mission ary said. “But many of us feel that such an idea is only wishful think ing. The Moslems here have no love for Christianity. They would tolerate limited activity because of world opinion, but nothing more.” Converts Are’ Rare The Missionaries frankly confess that they are up against a stone wall in their efforts to convert the Moslems. One missionary re lated that in 20 years he had suc ceeded in making only one convert from Mohammedanism and this one was on his deathbed. Another I priest has the same record. He said that he had to baptize his one Mos lem convert secretly. The convert believed he would be killed by his Moslem brethren if they learned he had “forsaken the prophet. Analyzing the obstinate resist ance of the Moslems to Christian ity, the missionaries give these mo tives: —Christianity has too many hard teachings for the followers of Mo hammed. From the Christian view point, the Moslem leads an immor al life. He is not interested in em bracing a teaching that would cur tail his earthly pleasures. —The modern Moslem is the product of countless generations of hatred for the Christians. His torically, the Moslems consider Christians their natural enemies. This attitude can bo traced beck te the crusades and oven to the prophet himself. So it is with those interest ed not in one mission, or one society or one part of the world, but missions of the Church aided by the Society Propagation of example, we proud of the Christians, who of Communist persecution made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Zose. The next moment, we feel justifiable anger at the Communists who mentally tor tured a priest for two years, and convinced that he was indoctrin ated. sent him to the shrine to win the faithful away from the Holy Father. For are justifiably 10.000 Chinese after five years A dispatch from Pakistan tells that the Moslems insist on their religion being taught to Chris tions. The Church, however, seems to be winning the battle for religious freedom slowly. At the same time, word comes from Uganda, Africa, that the Mis sions have inaugurated a sys tem which we have long favored in the United States, six years of elementary schools, three years for junior or high schools and three years for senior schools or colleges. Hurrah for Africa which gives education as we dn hut in less time, by making the students work harder That joy is tempered by the sad news that the Mau Mau in Kenya killed two missionary Sisters, and car ried off two Sisters and a priest. This warning was made here in Osservatore Romano Vatican City daily, by Vittonno Veronese gen era) secretary of the Permanent Committee for Internationa) Con gresses of the Apostolate nf the Laity. Mr. Veronese wrote the article upon his return from Uganda central Africa where he helped or ganize and participated in the first African Congress of the lay apos totate. The article applies te Africa the cautions voiced by His Holi. nesa Pepe Pius XII in his Christ mas address! The Pope then la beled as an illusory dream the ideas that technological progress alone could solve the world's problems and bring genuine hap piness. "Unless the spiritual and educa tional forces seize leadership (in Africa),” Mr. Veronese wrote, “the people will fall under'the spell of excitement for scientific progress and the false dream that techno logical progress is the highest hu man value and the only one ca pable of bringing freedom and prosperity “While a civilization founded on clans and tribes crumbles, the Afri cans will seize science, cast them selves into the development of their country's economy and de mand they be masters of their own destinies. Who then will save them from the snares of materialism? -------------------o------------------ Germans Warned About Meetings COLOGNE (NC) German Catholics have been warned against participating in a number of inter national meetings during the tear 1954 which, though carefully cam oflaged are organized by common ism.
