The Central Catholic league teams are galloping along at a fast pace and there is no doubt that the winner of the race will cross the line pant ing and leading only by about a half length. Columbus St. Marys made sure of this last week when it upset the Springfield Central Catholic entry'. But outside of Columbus and the Central Catholic league, especially in the southern and eastern part of the Diocese, there is some real ball being played by parochial schools. Starting in Lancaster with St. Marys, reaching down to Cen tral Catholic at Chillicothe and then going across to New Lexington and the St. Aloysius team, up a few miles to Somerset Holy Trin ity and across to Zanesville with Rosecrans, one can find a pretty good record of good teams. Best won and loss record among these squads are those of New Lex St. Al's and Holy Trinity but the other teams are by no means sec ondary. Lancaster and Zanesville play hard schedules meeting many class A teams At the present time, according to comparative scores, and they don’t mean very much, the New Lex ington team shows the greatest strength but has yet to prove it self since the Blue Knights will meet Lancaster, Holy Trinity and Rosecrans in that order before the season’s end. It’s too bad that these teams couldn't find it worthwhile to unite in a league. It would probably prove interesting and worth while over a period of years for there are many natural rivalries among the towns. It doesn't seem likely however that this will happen. At any rate, any one of these teams long with New ark St. Francis and Columbus St. Mary is strong enough to pull a “good draw” in their district meet and slip through to the finals. In fact this looks to be the best year for quite some time. Lancaster. Newark and Columbus St. Mary’s are in the exempt village and pa rochial tournament, i 1 licothe Central enters the county tourna ment, Rosecrans plays in the eas tern district while St. Aloysius and Holy Trinity go direct to the Southeastern district ‘meet in Athens. Three of the Columbus parochial schools are part of the greater Co lumbus Swimming League this year Rosary and St. Charles com pete in one section while Aquinas, returning tn the swim sport after many years, is in the other section At the present writing, St Charles is one nf the leading teams in the league. o------------------- TIMES Classified Ads will give you maximum result* at a mini mum of cost. Sth Ave. I Newark St. Francis and Columbus St. Charles, co-leaders in the Central Catholic League, will meet Friday night at the St. Charles gym in a game for undisputed first place in the loop. Both squads have five and one league marks. The Carolians handed Newark their only league defeat in the first meeting of the two, 71-68, in Newark, last December 18. Newark, St. Charles Contest Tops Central Catholic League The leadership of the Central Catholic league will go to only one team this week as the weeks long three-way deadlock has been brok en. Columbus St Mary knocked Springfield Central Catholic's de fending champs out of the lead last week with a 51-47 win at the Aquin as gym. The Springfield loss left Newark St. Francis and Columbus St. Char les on top of the heap with five and one loop marks. The two clash Friday night at St. Charles. In an earlier meeting this season, the Carolians gave Newark one of its two losses, 71-68. The other St. Francis defeat came last week against Neu- Lexington SI Aloy sius Next Tuesday Springfield will meet the Wave in Newark. St Mary will attempt to make it two league wins in a row when they meet Columbus Rosary in the only other loop contest Friday night. Tuesday at Springfield, Mike Capizello’s Tornadoes climb ed hack on the winning side with an easy romp over winless Colum bus Holy Family. In last week’s action. St. Charles humbled Holy Family 79-28 in the Carolian gjm. Joe Endres tallied 26 points and Jack Bafcheck added 12 as the Cards built up a 13-3 lead at the quarter and 29 10 at the half. Coach Jack Ryan cleared his bench while sending tn 11 men and all of them wound up in the scor ing column, Elgin was high man for Holy Family with 12 points. Newark St. Francis ran over Co lumbus Rosary 77-58 in Newark with scoring twins Bobby Franks and Frank Murphy leading the way with 15 and 16 points respectively. The surprise that marked him a "miracle man” came in the 1952 1953 cage year. Last season the Flyers had all but been written off they had lost by graduation the great Don (Monk) Meineke, Chuck Grigsby, Pete Boyle, Gene Joseph, and their roly poly sensa tion, Captain Leland Norris. Then the inevitable happened, Blackburn came up with a team that, besides playing sparkling ball throughout the season, scored the year's top upset—the victory over the Seton Hall Pirates of South Orange, N.J. This season looks much better for Blackburn and his Flyers. He started with a squad of 12. Only two, Don (Mickey) Donoher and Larry Pedicord, are seniors. Yet this is a team that has gleaned ex perience. Returning to the floor this year are junior forward Johnny Horan, whose defensive work is amazing Mickey Donoher. The Blue Knights handed New ark St. Francis its second loss of the season last week when they posted a 56-52 win Mike Allen, ace center, piled up 32 points in the frey. Seventeen of them came in the final period St. Al's trail ed at the start of the fourth quar ter 36-32 Once again it was Bobby Franks for Newark. He scored 24 points in the outing. Ralph McIntyre, out most of the season with an injury, started to hit his stride last week as Dover St. Joseph won their sixth game of the season 62-57 over Dellroy. Mc Intyre scored 13 points but was second to team mate Wise with 15. Marion St. Mary gave Delphos St John a scare before bowing to the slate’s number two ranked class team last week. The Blue Jays won 64 47 for their 15th win as against one loss. I"' son made 18 points which trailed 17 10 at 32-27 at the half, and third quarter. Zanesville Rosecrans made it eight wins last week as they trounc ed Junction City 73-64 with Chuck Mattingly pouring in 25 points. Blackburn Molds Cage Empire For The University Davton There seems to be no doubt that the "miracle man’’ on the Univer sity of Dayton campus again this year is basketball coach Tommy Blackburn. The former athlete who once taught history, is now making it. Blackburn's record through the years has been one of progress and success. In three seasons he brought the University of Dayton Flyers out of obscurity into the national basketball spotlight. He established a new basketball em pire with two solid seasons in which his team won 59 games and lost only 10. “Jumping Jack” Salee. Seasoned players back are Larry Pedicord. Don Miller, George Woywood, and Bill Uhl. A nucleus of the team has had the experience to put the Dayton Flyers out in the front ranks, but inexperience of the sophomores is a major hurdle Blackburn must clear. Blackburn took over at the Uni versity of Dayton tn 1947. The pre vious year the school, staffed by the priests and brothers of the So ciety of Mary, had won only four games. Yet at the end of five years, Blackburn became the third coach in basketball history to win 100 games in his first five years in the college field And he man aged this despite the fact that his first two teams lost a total of 28 games. The war interrupted Blackburn’s coaching career. He served in the Navy in Tom Hamilton's famed physical education program and was discharged as a lieutenant. Then he came to Dayton. Prior to the war Blackburn, who was born in Otway, O., coached all sports at West Carrollton, O., and from 1935 until he entered the service he was High.
