The new approach to kill ing off the Church is believed just as effective by the Reds, and it creates less furor among the people. This analysis of the treatment of the Church in communist Czecho slovakia is made by Father Alex ander Heidler, former professor of theology al Prague University now a religious broadcaster Radio Free Europe here. poses as an affectionate spouse. But at the same time she is adding small doses of poison to his food so that eventually his vital organs will disintegrate and he will die. and for Father Heidler compared communist regime to an unfaith ful wife who is plotting to get rid of her husband. To avoid suspicion, he said, the wife tells everyone how wonderful her husband is and Likewise the communist re gime in Czechoslovakia loudly proclaims religious freedom and even feigns benevolence to the Church through financial contri butions to priests, Father Heid ler declared. But all the while the regime is slyly infecting a whole series of poisons into the body of the Church. the These poison injections do not make headlines, the priest said, but they are designed to eat away at the very structure of the Church. He listed the following “poisons” that are fed to the Church: restric tions on all the Bishops, isolation of the clergy, secret “trials” and sentences of the clergy', establish ment of communist-supervised “seminaries,” curtailment of re ligious instruction in schools, and insidious efforts to keep the people from church. Not a single Catholic Bishop Is today actively directing his di ocese in Czechoslovakia, Father Heidler pointed out. Even those Bishops who are not formally un der errest or in jail are kept iso lated from their clergy and faith ful, he said. Regime-appointed officials have taken over the ac tive direction of the dioceses. They are not permitted to call on their Bishops for consultation. Mail to the Bish op is answered by someone else or ignored. Priests are not even per mitted to visit a colleague in a neighboring parish without the per mission of local Red authorities. Red “secretaries” keep a constant watch on the priest. He knows that an incautious word could land him in prison or bring his "induction’’ into the army. Even while hearing confessions he must be on his guard because Red agents might try to lure him into giving advice that could later be construed as “anti-State.” The two regime-supported “sem inaries’* are designed to make sure that all future priests are also apostles of communism, Father Heidler charged. Instruction Sabotaged The traditional religious instruc tion in the schools has been sabo taged through the following mea sures. Father Heidler said: Instruc tion has been cut to include only the second to the seventh grade. When classes are held they are at the end of the day to encourage youngsters to skip them and go home. Children attending the class es must have the written permis sion of their parents. Parents who grant this permission find them selves subtly discriminated against. No classes are given at all unless there are at least 50 pupils who can secure the permission of then parents. When classes are held the regime tries to-appoint a commun ist as the instructor in religion. The regime discourages church attendance by organizing “volun tary work brigades” and holding important party meetings on Sun days. Father Heidler added. Local officials also make frequent use of the right to close the church be cause of “epidemics”. The Red ar gument is that the gathering of such a large number of people would only serve to spread that disease. At the same time no sim ilar ban is put on theaters or party meetings, the priest said. -----------------o----------------- New Novena Series At Holy Cross To Begin, Jan. 29 Father Patrick J.
