2—THE CATHOLIC TIMES Friday. Feb. 19, 1954 Vatican Issues arning On St. Bridget Manual VATICAN CITY (NC) The Holv See has issued a warning against a widely circulated booklet containing pray ers and promises allegedly revealed to St. Bridget of Sweden The action was taken by the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, the Vatican hod} faith and morals of Catholics throughout the world. The Holy Office has instructed all Catholic Bishops "not to give permission for publication or re printing of the booklet or other written matter containing these promises.” The Congregation also stated that there is “no guarantee of authenticity" for the prayers. The booklet, which has been translated into various languages, is entitled: “The Secret of Happi ness. The Fifteen Prayers Revealed by Our Lord to St. Bridget in the Church of St. Paul at Rome. Various editions of the booklet have been circulated in the United States. One of them falsely car ries the “Imprimatur" (It maj be printed) of His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman. Archbishop of New York. The New York archdiocesan chancery office last year called at tention to the fact that the “Im primatur" was unauthorized The chancery office stated the “Impri matur” had been expressly refused because “of a number of objec tionable features" in the booklet. Research shows that there i absolutely no foundation for the assertion that the prayers of the promises were revealed to St. Brid get. (2) The so-called "magnificent promises" attached to the prayers are theologically false. The booklet lists 15 prayers BLUE VALLEY BUTTER IS GOOD BUTTER That's Why Millions Use It it's charged with safeguarding the which it sajs should be recited daily with 15 Our Fathers and Hail Miry’s for a whole year and sets forth 21 promises allegedly attach ed to this practice. Among the promises, some of which theologians call "impossible” are the following: an unqualified guarantee of eternal salvation as surance of being "joined to the supreme choir of angels” deliver ance of 15 souls of the entreater’s lineage from purgatory the con firmation in grace of 15 souls of his lineage: the conversion of 15 sinners of his lineage the recep tion of Christ’s Body and Blood 15 days before death, and "a special draught from the fountain of my Deity, something I will not do for those who have not recited my prayers." Theologians point particularly to the unqualified guarantee of eternal salvation as heretical. They cite Canon 16 of the sixth session of the Council of Trent (1545-63) which reads: ''If anyone shall say that he will have, with absolute and in fallible certitude, the great gift of perseverance (in God's grace) unto the end, unless he has learn this by special revelation, let him be anathema.” Theologians say this assurance of salvation could be had only if it were revealed directly by God to the individual. An example of this is the direct assurance the Good Thief received from Christ on Good Friady, when the Savior said: “This day thou shalt be with me in paradise.” NCCYl Officers \l Parlev WASHINGTON (NC) Mrs. W illiam Dalton of Augusta. Holy Office Condemns Book Dealing With Sex VATICAN CITY (Radio, NC) The Sacred Congrega tion of the Holy Office published a decree here announcing it had condemned and placed on the Index of Forbidden Books a work entitled “Plentitude: Temoignage d’une Femme Sur L’Amour” (Plentitude: A Woman’s Testimony on Love.) The book was written by Jacqe line Martin and published in 1951 A front page article in Osserva tore Romano, Vatican City daily I Of Interest to Catholics RADIO PROGRAMS Saturday, Feb. 20 WHKC, Columbus, 6:45 p. m. —Catholic News. Sunday, Feb. 21 said the condemnation of the book should serve as an object lesson and a warning in regard to the present flood of sex related publi cations. some of which, it added, have been defended even by Ca tholics. The unsigned, but authoritative article, was entitled “With Regard to Sexual Literature.” It under scored that the Church has been fighting objectionable books of this type for a long time. It cited two cyclical* by Pope Pius XI—Di cini Illius Magistri Christian Edu cation nt Youth) and Casti Con nubn (Christian Marriage) as di rected in part against sex liter al tire. Osservatore recalled what it call ed a most important discourse hy His Holiness Pope Pius XII in which, it said, the Pontiff put the finger “not only on unholy sex literature in general, but on cer tain false or, at least, dangerous doctrines which are being spread, even in the Catholic field.” The speech referred to by Os servatore was one given by Pope Pius to French parents who were on a pilgrimage and were received by him on September 19. 1951. During his talk, Pope Pius re ferred to "writings, books and ar ticles. touching on sexual instruc tion which today often achieve enormous sales and flood the whole world, engulfing children, submerging the rising generation, and disturbing engaged and newly married couples." "One is left astounded by the effrontery of such literature," Pope Pius seid. ''While even paganism appeared to pause with respect before the secrecy of conjugal intimacy, one now sees its mystery violated and the sight of it—sensual and realis tic—offered as food for the gen eral public and even for the young. “One truly wonders whether the border line is sufficiently well marked between this self-styled in struction. and the erotic and ob scene literature or illustrations which deliberately aim at corrup tion. or shamefully exploit for vile interests the lowest instincts of our fallen nature Ohio----------------- News In Brief YOUNGSTOWN A second Catholic high school for Youngs town and expansion of the present Ursuline High School are the goals of a 52.500,000 building fund cam paign started last week by Bishop Emmet M. Monsignor Drew said, “We must never allow’ the state to be con trolled by any church," but he warned against any attempt “to line our people up in a religioua conflict" by creating the impres sion that any church is “trying to control our government.” Our Congressman has won the support of Harlem for his fight on discrimination against our people," Monsignor Drew said. "We would expect that he would fight religious bigotry with even greater zeal, not only because he is a religious leader, but also be cause he belongs to the majority religion and so is in a better po sition to prevent that type of prejudice." The Monsignor said that a can didate, nominated by a political party, is “in no way concerned with glorifying his church or syna gogue.” “When we look over the candi dates. and note that more than one are not ideal members of their re ligious group, we can be assured that it was not the church or syna gogue that chose them.” he said. Representative Powell's move to organize his United Protestant Po litical Action Unit” to investigate the religious beliefs of city govern ment officials was also criticized by Negro newspapers, including The Courier, which called the action “a deplorably dangerous move.” “We are sorry,” the Courier said, “that a group of Negroes ha* launched it.” WHERE THOUSANDS SAVE MILLIONS 2'/2% Wonderfully young, excitingly slenderizing and amaz ingly low priced ... that $ this eosy-te-wear dress marvol that you’ll favor far many months to came.
