This Paper Printed bj Vnmn Labor Planned Parenthood Modern vouths are sometime- called, “crazy, mixed-up kids.” Modern society might similarly be called “crazy” and "mixed-up.” At the same time that the Columbus Chamber of Commerce is rejoic ing that the population of the city is growing rap idly, some tew of its members are complaining that the number of births in Columbus last year exceeded the number of deaths by 5,000. At the same time that most business firms are advertis ing for additional customers, there are those who are worrying because large numbers of potential customers are being born. While doctors are working haid to discover wavs of helping people to live longer, some of their colleagues are bothered because so many people are living. While advocating hotter children, some few irreligious humanitarians are. wishing for fewer children While trying to eliminate “moral delin quents and mental cases and chronic illness’* (sic) some proponents are urging the smaller families which so otten produce these very conditions. At a time when people aie clamoring to adopt babies that do not exist, there are others who would deny life to other little ones, indeed it is a crazy, mixed-up world. Scorning Parenthood When Almighty God created Adam and Eve, he gave them the commandment, “increase and mul tiply and fill the earth.” (Genesis J, 28) Through out the centuries the greatest joy of husbands and wives ha*, been the children whom they can all their own. Governments rejoiced in the joyful citizens giowing up in the families of the nation, families without children weie recognized as being incomplete. hildless couples were the objects of sympathy. This has been the traditional outlook of civilized peoples. It has been left to people ol our day to look down on parenthood, to sympathize with parents and to feel sorry for large families. Indeed it is a crazy, mixed-up world. In the tremendous power of procreation, God has given to men and women, a gift that he with held even from the angels. To fathers and mothers alone did God give a share in His creative power. They alone, of all God’s creatures, can give hie to intelligent beings and provide citizens lor eaith and heaven God. Himself created the angels, all of them. God created the I list man and woman but after thai He made Himself dependent on human beings for the children whom He wishes to give Him praise on earth and glory in heaven. Today, there are snnie who think less of the wonderful gift that Gnd has given to mankind, than of the inconvenience which it may cause individual men and women. Indeed it is a crazy, mixed up world. Afraid of Facts Some years ago, men weie not afraid to call a spade a spade. Birth control wa* called just that. Penpie were honest enough to admit that what they wanted was to limit the number of births, Today, we are less honest. We are afraid to lace the facts. Those who wish to avoid inconvenience or seek selfish pleasure alone, talk of "Planned Parent hood.” What they really mean is that plans should be made so that there will not be any parenthood. Economic security is more important than chil dren. Ease and comfort are more sought aitei than the joys of seeing their own little ones grow and wax strong and develop into upright men and women. The rich plan how the poor shall limit the size of their families. The powerful want,Io tell their less influential neighbors how many children they shall have. The danger grows and grows that greater and greatei control shall he concentrated in fewer and fewer hands over the lives of more and more peo ple. Frequently, the people who -peak out publicly for personal righty and individual initiative, are the same people who want to tell other people how to run their personal lives and how and when to exercise the most '.acred nf their individual rights. Indeed, it is a crazy, nuked up world. Unb«s»d Medically Medical men today have thrown overboard most of the reasons advanced by their col leagues of former years who sought to spread plan ned parenthood The discoveries of modern medi cine have greatly reduced the hazards of child bearing Maternal deaths ate very few today. Meth ods have been found oi con ecting conditions which formerly were a grave hardship to mothers. Of course, not all the danger ha* been removed. Not all the inconvenience of carrying a I ild. giv ing him birth and of caring for him afterwards, have been eliminated But modern medicine has given wonderful assistance to mothers of families. And yet, there are still some physicians who urge birth control in spite of the emotional upheavals and the physical sicknesses and the family prob Jems that frequently affect those who practice birth control Indeed it is a crazy mixed-up world. Modern studies have shown that mental retards tion and nimal delinquency are not necessarily more prevalent tn the families of the poor. There aie just as many mental defectives in the homes of the rich in proportion to their number in the pop illation as there are the home* of the poor. De linquency is found proportionately just as be quently in the more respectable sections of a city as it is elsewhere. Sweeping Statements Proportionately. it would be extremely difficult to prove that more delinquents came from poor families than from the rich Likewise, delinquency and feeble mindcdne-s are no more prevalent in large families than Ihev are where there is an only child nr a small family As a matter of lad. fre ouently it is the only child who is over protected by a doting mother and ignored hv a careless father, who comes to the attention of the juvenile courts. Broad sweeping statements made hv those who pro mote sinful contraception by crying nut against the so-called evil of large families prove nothing Indeed, it is a crazy, mixed-up world The economic and social and medical reason* against artificial birth control alt have their place, but the most important of all the reasons is that birth control is contrary to Gnd law It is against the natural law of God is against His positive law’ a* revealed in the Sacred Scripture.* It is mor ally sinful because it prostitutes the faculties which God has given for a definite purpose and prevents them from fulfilling the reason for their existence It interfere.* with nature itself. It makes personal selfish satisfaction the sole reason for marriage. A Detestable Thing In the Rook of Genesis (38. 9 and 10). God called the sin of Onan. "a detestable thing” and the lord slew him in punishment for his sin. The sin which Onan committed wgs the interference with lhe natural results of marriage. Today it is euphemis tically called “birth control.” He planned against parenthood. It seems strange that some of those who claim that the sole source of Revelation is the Bible, ignore what is so clearly stated there. Indeed, it is a crazy mixed-up world. Were this vice less openly' professed by some of our fellow citizens, it would be better to ignore planned parenthood and all it implie*. Lest there he those who might be scandalized if the truth is not preached, this paper feels constrained to men tion it.,We apologize to our manv readers w ho know’ that no God-fearing and ^d-loving man or woman can countenance sin or approve something so evidently sinful as Birth Control. Whatever it is called, sin is still sin. Just Among Ourselves P«i»mg Comment Considered or Inconsiderate St. Paul, in his First Epistle to the. Corinthians dr, 27). says, “1 chastise my body, and bring it into subjection: lest perhaps, when I have preached to others. 1 myself should become a castaway.” Here in a very few words we find expressed the true rea son for the bodily penances of fasting and abstain ing which l/’nt imposes upon the faithful. The body is full nf demands it wants ease, com fort. pleasurable feelings and emotions it has ap petite* for abundant and pleasing food and drink. The trouble is that lhe body’s demands are often excessive, and they come into conflict with the needs and demands of the soul. When fleshly ap petite. and the spiritual appetite (tailed the will) are not in accord for good, the bodily tendency is to be curbed. And it is not always easy to curb it. The appetites or tendencies of the body have a way of alluring lhe soul. They solicit the unwary will to admit them Io the realm of the spirit. To keep these bodily tendencies in order, and to have ready control of them when they arise with sudden strength, the will requires practice in man aging them. The mother of men, the Church, com mands us to use this essential practice. Io that end she appoints special days and seasons of fasting and abstinence. Of all the demands of the flesh. tho-e for eat ing and drinking are the strongest, the most de- manding for they recur each few hours of life), and the most likely to become excessive. Therefore, while these two demand* are not the only one* to be controlled and kepi in pioper order, they offer a good and ready field for the exercise nf control. The person who manages these tendencies well will likely manage others properly. Exercising control, and repression, over the tle-hly appetite ,i. pa,.it ularly in the domain of eating and drinking, a man acquires strength to manage them when they arise in sudden surge and try. as they are continually trying. Io in vade the will and lead the soul to sin. Thus we “chastise the body’’ *o that we shall not become sin ners. or, as St. Paul puls it, “castaways” in the spiritual order. It is often said that the order of things in the bodily world around its is in conflict with the good ordei of the soul, that is. with virtue. Now, we have to use the goods of the bodily order the im portant thing is Io use them according to reason. To this end we cultivate the virtue o( temperance. Since the day of the oitginal sin tn Paradise, man s bodily appetites lend to be ill regulated, so that it is difficult Io use material Hungs in a leasonable way. We learn and maintain reasonable use by fa.*ting and abstaining. Here then is the answer to the young man, tak ing instructions in atholu icligmn, who demanded of hi* instructor, “What has my stomach to do with mv soul’’” It has much to do with the soul. For -mil and body in man are united in the single, if compound, human substance, and the drive lor human action comes from the total man: bodily ele ments as well as lhe spiritual soul bring stresses upon the acting person. Therefore, as we have said, these bodily elements arc not to ho given free and ruinous rein hut are to be alertly managed and strictly controlled. The world around us is forever soliciting us Io indulge the body. Ixink at. and listen to. the advertisements. Il has boon said, not entirely with out reason, that every advertisement, nf food, drink, automobile, furnishing for home, clothing, cosmetics, and so on thiough the great litany of goods (or sale, i« actually an invitation asking us to commit one of the seven capital sins. The ads deserve this harsh indictment because they are manifestly excessive. They play up the pleasure and comfort ot commodities they openly advocate the deep indulging oi bodily appetites. Even necessary goods arc presented as goods with the allurements ot "luxuries.” Now, no man does wrong in seeking to find and to purchase superior goods, or goods with convenient and pleasurable features. But *ihc point we make is that the pur veyors ol goods seem to have no appeal that is not an appeal to pride or soft sell indulgence. And the advertisements talk up this special appeal with a religious fervor. This is plainly a great lault and a disorder. The world itself, however, in its own domain, imposes very harsh penalties. What hardship people will endure that they may have a more stylish car. or may build up "security’’ tor their old age if any What personal sacrifice is demanded, and made, for the sake of being stylishly slim in per son, or to prevent wrinkles and gray hair and other signs ot detested age. \nd yet, so odd a thing is fallen human nature, that people who willingly un dergo the rigors of a currently fashionable diet aie apt to be loud in complaint against the nuld dietary regimen which the Church imposes by her laws of fast and abstinence. Si Paul noted this tact and commented upon it He said that lads preparing tor athletic contests accept the training table, and give up pleasures i modernly, such as candy smoking alcoholic drink, late hours), that they undertake demanding exer cise day after day. sacrificing leisure and move pleasant occupations. The young athletes deny themselves "all things” for the purpose of winning “a corruptible crown.” But we. by the training table of l/ni and like days and season*, seek a crown that is incorruptible, an everlasting and surpassingly great reward. We seek to attain heaven. If bodily appetites are in control of our lives, we shall not win to our goal. Therefore it is our bounden duty, as it should be our deep desire, to keep these appetites in their proper and subordinate place. We should welcome the penances of lx*nt. We should undertake the season nf self-denial with joy and high resolu tion \nd by the intensified effort of l,ent we may acquire new ease in performing the penance of self-control every day and hour nf our whole lives. This is what we need tn reach heaven this is the only “security” worth having. ..ii fcSeK .3 fl til JT 4SHIXGTOX LETTER WASHINGTON Today, five years alter he was sentenced to life imprisonment, Cardinal Mindszenty is a greater thorn in the side oi communism than he ev er was while ree. It is true that the Cardinal, held incommunicado by (he Red masters ot his native Hungary, cannot speak out as he once did. But others are speaking tor him, Protestants and Jews as well a* Catholics, and many of them in high places. The Cardinal’s mes sage against oppression and per secution is gelling a wider audi ence than he was ever able to give it. On the filth anniversary of his sentencing by' the communists. Cardinal Mindszenty s heroism in the face of religious oppression was lhe principal theme on the floors of the I nited Stales Sen ate and House of Representa tives. The Congressional Record for that day contained many refer ences and tributes to the im prisoned Cardinal Primate of Hungary. And Representative Charles ,1. Kersten of Wisconsin inserted lhe record the text of an N.C.W.C. News Service “round-up” on religious perse LOl IS nt HEXA Now that the I nited States has been "compelled” to nego tiate with Soviet Russia, as the Daily W orker of January 28 an nounces, n e vv Red propagan da drugs are being distrib uted to the American peo ple. They are handed out in e editorial of the Red daily organ of that date. We read: "Ameri ca’s economic interests demand insistently that the fanatical re fusal to accept peaceful coex istence he routed by the nation. The country ireeds real negotia tions at Berlin, not the appear ance of negotiations in order 1o •prove' that we can't negotiate peace.” 1 S "J JI' The "we” in that quotation is eloquent it is the brazen as sumption by the communists that they are part of America and speak for Americans. It is through the use of that "we” in the Daily Worker and in statements by the Politburo ol the Communist Party that the orders are given Malenkov's fol lowers here to spread certain poisonous ideas in the American scene. Through the use of that "we” the character of the Daily orker as a telegraph agency to the conspiracy is skillfully concealed. As a consequence, what the Daily Workers orders is too frequently accepted in press, radio, television, and even in the government of the United States. In that sense, the Rod organ is the most powerful daily newspaper in the United States. We can afford to examine this quotation from the Daily Work er more carefully than usual, since it is the key to the entir* Holy Russia W£" A Thorn In The Side Of The Reds cution in countries under com munist domination. This story had been widely used in the atholic Press of the United States and other countries. One Congressman, Alvin M. Rentley of Michigan, a non-Cath olic, told his confreres that he knew Cardinal Mindszenty per sonally. and was attached to the I'.S. Legal ion al Budapest at lhe lime of the Cardinal’s farci cal trial. An interesting phase of Repre sent alive Bentleys speech was his assertion that “before it ithe trial) started the Hungarians had made up their minds that they were going to hang him.” The Congressman added that "Rakosi, the communist boss in Hungary, advised Moscow of this decision, and the Russians wired back for bidding them to do it, as it would create too great an uproar. That was the only thing which saved Mindszenty’s life.” The Congressman declared that the Reds broke the Cardi nal’s body and nund in condi tioning him for his mock trial, but that since the trial, ‘‘the communists have taken pretty good care of him." ini ng And Dining Al Berlin present Red stiategy in this country. It contains the thoughts and arguments that every con cealed agent of Moscow and every public figure influenced by such persons will be repeat ing on a wide scale very short ly. Trojan Horta For the communists, let us re peat. this is the period of the "amended Trojan horse policy.” Persuading organs oi Western opinion and inducing its "peace partisans” to present a pleasant ly false picture of the Soviet dic tatorship. the Kremlin prepares lor a new killing at Berlin and elsewhere. For at the same time, its own representatives in the negotiations are making de mands which are firm and in sistent—for recognition of Red China and other major features of the Red line- knowing that these demands will be echoed by agents and "partisans” in thi* and other countries. Hence, will come the weakening of the West. The Daily U orker in its in structions. therefore, raises or rather resurrects the slogan of ••peaceful coexistence,” knowing well that by now it has become part ot American phraseology. Since it was first uttered by Stalin in 1927, as a ruse to de ceive the non-communist world, it been heard from the mouths of distinguished Americans particularly in the recent past. W.J'W .. ,. .* a I While it undoubtedly would have caused an uproar if Cardi nal Mindszenty had been put to death by’ the communists, the demonstrations in his hehalf on the fifth anniversary oi his sen tencing show that he is not for gotten. and never will be. Representative Frances P. Bol ton of Ohio observed: “Since that fateful day (on which he was sentenced to life imprisonment) this humble servant of the church, this staunch champion of human freedom, has carried on his tight against tyranny and brute force from his prison in some unknown corner of Hun gary. On this day. marking the tilth year of his life imprison ment. we pay tribute to him for his courageous defiance of evil forces and for his championing supreme ideals.” It is possible that, because of the great interest shown in Car dinal Mindszenty’s sufferings the Foreign Affairs committees in the U. S. Congress will give some consideration io the suppression of religious freedom and of re ligious opportunity of any kind in Eastern Europe. One Con gressman has already urged such a course of action. understanding of how to press this phrase home today, to speed American surrender once more to the Kremlin, a new Red pamphlet has been issued. “Peaceful Coexistence.” Its au thor is Joseph Stalin and it con tains the various statements made by the late dictator after the close of World War II. And what follows from that? That the country or countries in which socialism is established by the Soviet dictatorship must deceive the rest of the world as to communist purposes until it becomes possible to achieve the world Soviet dictatorship. Aesopian Language If that seems complicated, it is but a sample of communist argumentation which accompan ies Aesopian language. It is precisely what every communist understands from Trachten berg's foreword. It is exactly what follows from the’ funda mental Marxist-Leninist “princi ple” that there will be unceas ing war between Soviet Russia and the non-Soviet nations until the world dictatorship is won and the classless society or com munism begins. It is painful to observe that this "peaceful coexistence” hoax is being given credence by cer tain news dispatches from Ber lin. Notable among these is the Associated Press story of Janu ary 31 that a "new Molotov” has emerged, one who is gay and congenial, one who "evi dently has given orders to his staff to be friendly.” It is even pointed out that “his staff dine and wine the Western staffs constantly.” Well, there was plenty of wining at Yalta, and the wine has now turned into blood, that of the young men who lost their lives in Korea. American* can remind the secu lar press of that. '. ..' .. Inquiry Corner Q. Wrhat are the requirement! for the First Saturday devo tion? A. Inspired by the apparition of Our Lady at Fatima the dedi cation of Saturday to Our Lady is not new. The Sabbatine Privi lege in connection with brown scapular dates back to the thir teenth century. The First Satur day devotion promises the graces necessary for salvation to those who go to confession and receive Holy Communion on the first Saturday of five consecutive month. It i§ also required that the person pray five decades of the Rosary and meditate on the mysteries for fifteen minutes. Q. What about the chain pray er which is going about address to to Our Lady of Fatima? It is supposed to be approved by the ‘"Sisters of St. Francis” tn Bos ton, and promises that “The Fourth day after a favor will come to you '. A. Such practices are rank su perstition. No matter what good intentions may inspire those who pass them on it is not Catholic belief that God is bound by any pat formula. The Holy Eucharist carries with it the promise of “life everlasting” (John 6:55-59), ■but even that promise of Christ himself is not automatic. We must conform to the Life of Christ which grows in us by re ceiving the Sacrament. You can be sure that the Catholic Fran ciscan Sisters would have noth ing to do with such a chain pray er. and that prayers to Our I^dy, and all prayers, should be ad dressed to God without bizarre promotion stunts and false prom ises of favors. Catholics receiving any chain prayer, and any other prayer w hich makes rash definite promises of favors should de stroy them. Q. Who vas St. Genevieve, patroness of Paris? A. She was born at Nar.terre near Pans in 422 A.D., and was influenced to a life in religion by St. Germain of Auxerre. Her virtue and miraculous powers built up her influence with the. people of Paris and made pos sible great works for their bene fit. When Attila, the Hun. ap proached Paris in 451 she kept the people from panic and to her •was attributed his turning aside frqm the city. Again when the Frarfte*- attacked the city her holiness and calm led to plans which kept lhe people from starving. Her feast day is Jan uary 3rd. k. What should be prepared in the house when the priest is aoming on a sick call? A. There should be a table with white cloth covering it and upon it two candles and a crucifix. On the table also there should be Holy Water, a glass of water and a teaspoon. If the sick per son is 1o be anointed there should be some cotton (five or six small pieces) and. if possible, some small pieces of lemon for purifying the priest's fingers. He should be met at the street door with a lighted candle. Q. Whflt is the bentjfic vision? A. "The modern trend,” according to Father Kel ler, "is to oppose atomistic indi vidualism with collectivism by minimizing man s individual na ture Today a morally irre sponsible individualism presents little problem the real moral danger lies in the modern ten dency toward collectivism be cause of its ‘depersonalization’ of the individual.” Our own observation leads us to believe that while laissez-faire individualism in the United States is only a shadow of its former hulk, it would be prema ture for the coroner to sign its death certificate. There is still a lot of life in the old dog. thanks to the lender ministrations of influential organizations and periodicals, some ol which are likely to use Father Keller’s re cent booklet for their own pur poses whether he wants them to or not. Representative Spokesman The Freepian magazine can be cited as a representative spokesman for this group of neo individualists. In our opinion, they are wasting their time, but unfortunately they can create a lot of confusion in the process. Their methods are sometimes ra ther desperate Anybody whn disagrees with them can expect ma ma a hm Father Healey---------------------- in heaven. It is called beatific because this face-to-face vision of God fulfills the deepest de sires of man and makes him completely happy. St. Paul speaks of it in these words: "We see now through a mirror in an obscure manner, but then face to face.” (First Corinthians 13:12) Q. Who is the patron saint of policemen? A. In 1950 Pope Pius XII named St. Michael, the archan gel. patron of policemen. By var ious traditions he is also patron of hatmakers, grocers and is in voked for a good death. His feast is September 29th. Q. What does the Church hart against non Catholics that she refuses to let Catholics enter what she calls “mixed” mar riages? A. The Church does not oppose mixed marriages because of any judgment made upon individual persons who are not Catholic. The Catechism states clearly the chief reasons when it says, “The Church forbids Catholics to marry non-Catholks because mix ed marriages often bring about family discord, loss of faith on the part of the Catholic, and neglect of the religious train ing of the children.” This has been the Christian rule from the beginning and dispensations per mitting mixed marriages are given only when there 1s some assurance that these dangers do not threaten the couples apply ing. Q. "What are the prophecies of St. Malachy? A. They are considered by many to be forgeries written in the sixteenth century. St. Mala chy (1098-1148), Archbishop of Armagh, died in the arms of St. Bernard and was canonized in 1199. In 1590 (here was discov ered in Rome a collection of 112 mystical mottoes which he was said to have written down dur ing his visit to Rome in 1139, having received them in a vision. Some of them are remarkably apt as those who call Pius XI “Fides intrepida” (faith undaunt ed) and Pius XIT “Papa angeli cus” (angelic father) but that is likely coincidence. Q. Wrhat are the colors of the Church Year? What do they mean A. White, used on feasts of Our Lord and Our Lady (and for confessor-saints) signifies purity and perfection red. used for the Holy Ghost and for martyrs, signifies burning love and shed ding of blood, green, used for Pentecost and Epiphany signifies life and hope. Violet, used for Advent and Lent, indicates a penitential period or dav Awhile black, used for Good Friday and funeral masses, signifies death or mourning. Rose may be used on the third Sunday pf Advent and the fourth Sunday nf Lent to signify joy in the midst of pennance. and cloth-of-gold may he substituted for white, red, or green. This includes President Eisenhower whose socio-economic program, as outlined in his recent series nf messages to the Congress, is bluntly characterized by Th« Freeman as “most unsatisfactory, and not a little disturbing.” President Eisenhower, in the opinion of The Freemans edi tors, "has altogether failed to re dedicate this country unequivo cally to the ideals and practices of individual freedom.” The President is criticized for having asserted unqualifiedly that "the human problems of individuals are a proper and important con cern of our government.” This, The Freeman concludes, is "the philosophic premise that under lies all forms of statism and col lectivism, from the Roosevelt Truman creeping varieties to the fully developed socialisms and communisms in which they all must in time eventuate.” President Eisenhower’s socio economic program may or may not be adequate to our present needs, but to brand it with the socialist label is to insult the in telligence of the American peo ple. If President Eisenhower is a socialist, heaven help the rest of us. including Pope Pius XII who stated as recently as August 5. 1950, that "In the tangled con fusion of existing conditions, especially social conditions, no one doubts the necessity for the State to widen its field of activ ity and also to increase its pow er.” The Holy Father deplores excesses in the power of the State, but ‘'naturally.” he says, "we have in mind here real ex cesses.” I doubt that any re sponsible student of Papal teach ing would say that President Eis enhower’s socio-economic pro gram falls under this heading. The fact that a responsible periodical like The Freeman is willing to make such a ridiculous charge against a Republican President ought to give pause to those who say that laissez-faire individualism is dead the Unit ed Slates. The patient is ailing, hut the coroner's services will probably not be recognized for some time to come.
