12—THE CATHOLIC TIMES Friday. Apr. 2, 1954 Rome Questions Source Of Lithuanian Pastoral VATICAN CITY (NC) The authenticity of a pastoral attributed to the onlv Catholic Bishop in Lithuania has been questioned in a front-p$ge article in Osservatore Romano, Vat ican City daily. The pastoral, published in the communist press, was at tributed to Bishop Casimir Paltarokas of Panexezys, 77, the onlv Bishop still permitted to function in Lithuania. It cited what is called “positive facts’’ to disprove “enemy propaganda’’ that there is no freedom of relig ion in Lithuania two pas* Osservatore Romano raises problems regarding the alleged toral: (1) The letter’s terminology fests it was written not by a Bish op but by one unfamiliar with Church phraseology. (2) The “positive facts’’ cited to prove that “freedom of religion’’ exists, actually demonstrate that the Church is severely repressed. SUg- The pastoral states that there are now 688 churches open in Lithuan ia. served by 741 priests, and there is a seminary at Kaunas with 75 students. But, Osservatore notes, in 1939, there were 900 churches open in Lithuanie, served by some 1,600 diocesan and SOO order priest*. Th* pastoral makes no mention of th* three seminaries closed by th* regime, nor of th* fact that as late as 1945 the Kaunas sem- {MalivuSlum 44 IAST BROAD ST. The alleged pastoral speaks of two archdioceses and four dioceses in the country, Osservatore notes, but says nothing of the seven Bishops who were imprisoned, mur dered or forced into exile by the Soviet regime. It ignores the fact that more than a thousand priests have been deported, imprisoned or exiled. The pastoral says nothing of the fact that the civic rights of priests still in IJthuania have been cur tailed, that they are under con stant police vigilance, that they are burdened with exorbitant, base less taxes. It passes over in sil ence the fact that churches must pay "luxury taxes" like places of amusement. The pastoral'* “positive facts" demonstrate, at most, only a lim ited freedom of worship, Osser vetore concludes. History shows that this limited freedom of wor ship is progressively curtailed as communism consolidates its pow er in a country. It become* al most non-existent after com munism has held sway for many years, like in Russia. The article then paid tribute to "the heroic faithful, who in spite of slow suffocation remain stead fast in the faith through a perse cution which only the most pharisa. ical hypocrisy can stamp as ‘religious freedom’.” Marian Year Pilgrimages Year of Marv 1954 PERSONALLY ESCORTED Visit LOURDES FATIMA ZARAGOZA MONT SERRAT LA SALETTE ROME ASSISI PADUA PARAY-le-MONIAL ARS NEVERS MIRACULOUS MEDAL SHRINE, PARIS LISIEUX Frequent Departures Tru* Catholic Tour* At On* Right Price. Why, in Mexico, ever since the 1926 regime of the religion hating Phitarco Elias Calles, it has been against the law for anybody to wear religious garb in public. Sillv Season In Mexico Can there possibly be anything sillier than a silly person in a po sition ot authority? law is sillier even than a silly of ficial. And when you ’get the and the get her! official law to- was an There exceedingly silly spectacle the other day at the busiest street i n ersection in Mexico City, (yes, two) arrested every citizen to regard with con tempt a government capable of such idiocies. Idiocy it is—idiocy of the pur est ray serene. You would expect anybody who could pass such a law to start babbling and drooling at any moment. Fully to express the utter foolish ness of the thing is impossible. But 1 will do the best I can. Here is a woman—any woman. Like every other human being, she has the inalienable right to se lect for herself any respectable walk in life. She can be a nurse or a typist. She can be a wife and mother. She can be a musician, an interior dec orator, a designer, an artist. No body has the remotest right to say her nay. She can also, if she wants to, be a nag, a shrew, a nuisance —or a temptress who goes about smashing families and ruining lives. She has no real right to be that sort of thing, but |here is no law on the books that says she can’t. She can also dress as sensibly—or as fool ishly- as she pleases. Well, this particular woman de cides to dedicate her life to serv ing God and her fellowmen. In order to do that singleminded ly and completely, she gives up ev erything that might interfere. She gives up beaus. She gives up marriage, children, home life She gives up comforts she embraces poverty. She also gives up one of the things that is dearest to the heart ol a woman the right to adorn herself, to wear jewels and pretty, clothing, to make herself as beau tiful as she can. woman sacrifices all that, with the other desirable and attires herself modest humbly. that is the sort of thing along things, ly and Now 813 Bryden Rd. Colombo* 5. Ohio that every reasonable person re specks, and respects deeply. We admire unselfishness, gentleness, humility, patience, long suffering no matter where we see them. But the ridiculous men who hate religion and goodness hate every thing that reminds them of religion and goodness. The Calles regime in Mexico, like the Communist regimes in many countries today, hated God and the things of God. Calles tried to wipe out the very memory of God in Mexico. He failed, as these fools always tail. He is gone, and God and re ligion remain. But some of the im becilic Calles laws survive. And so. Gen. Miguel Flore/ Vil lar ot the Mexicon Army called the police and had Sister Guadalupe arrested. The thing ended amusinglx Sis ter Guadalupe explained at the po lice station that the "religious garb" was a uniform. Uniforms are legal in Mexico. The police joyfully set her free. Isn’t it high time the Mexican government repealed its insane anti-religious laws? Government cannot afford to make itself ridiculous. And the Mexican government is mad? pre posterous by incidents like the ar rest of Sister Guadalupe. -------------------o---------- Marian GongreNN Planned SEOUL.
